So here's this weird little trend that's been popping up. The 'hostage' vote - if i don't get what i like then i won't vote xxx or i'll change parties, etc.
This really isn't how politics is supposed to work. What is supposed to happen is that if there are things that the party is doing that you don't feel represent your constituents wishes then you work within the party to try and bring in policy that you do like. And you do respect the parties membership when they vote for one thing or another. You do not threaten to take your ball and go home just because the party doesn't perfectly reflect your views . If you do that, you lose the ability to positively influence the party at all and it just leads to more and more extreme views.
And yet this is exactly what we are seeing happened. My concern is what we will end up with is seven or eight parties each with their own special interests attempting to gain the attention of the public and it ceases to be a good governing body and just becomes a popularity contest that's focused on optics rather than results .
