My son is 17 we'll call him A, and already hates the government, he's really smart. Anyways, last night the phone rang, it was the liberals. Apparantly the person on the phone had a very strong accent and a poor grasp of language.

L: This is the Liberals calling, can we count on you for your support
A: Oh, well, if you want me to vote Liberals, maybe you SHOULD LEARN THE F*CKING LANGUAGE.

Now I normally don't endorse my son's trucker language, and I certainly don't like him picking on people who have accents. But man, I almost cried I laughed so hard. Lovin that kid o mine

I have a problem with this because obviously your son understood what was being said and it seems as though he is showing an intolerence to other nationalalities. Is this the Canada we want I think not. He is 17 and if that is what we have managed to teach our young people then we might as well just close our borders to everybody who is different than ourselves. This is shameful not funny.

Well said.

When I first read this, all I thought was the poor guy on the other end of the line, likely a recent immigrant, volunteering to work the phones, perhaps hoping to work on english skills.

While racist was probably the wrong word earlier in this thread, this was a rude, bigoted act. Attacking the individual, not the party.

Worse yet is the praise from both the parent directly and seemingly almostly exclusively from right wingers here. Is this a common factor among the right. Rude mean spirited bigotry?

I'd be ashamed to be associated with anyone who champions this kind of behavior. For those those supporing it, do Canadians a favor when you travel; Pretend to be an American.

One might also say that automatically assuming that someone with an accent or someone who does not have a good command of the language has to non-Caucasian is also a racist assumption. My parents were born in Canada and grew up in a rural community and still speak very non-grammatical English. They are both white. There has been a problem with my children imitating my parents and we have discouraged it.

In this case it was rude in my mind to bring up the language issue. It is also somewhat specious to immediately correlate language deficiency or an accent with race.

I guess everyone is at the pub.

Those who are responsible to deliver services in English speaking regions of Canada should speak understandable English. Imagine the furor if services in French speaking regions of Canada were not understandable.

Personally I am sick of listening to my Federal Government representatives struggling to put a sentence together in English because their first language is French. This does not make me a racist - a Francophobe maybe, and proud of it.

francophobe? Pas vie en Louisiane, hell we need both languages and we are learning Spanish as well, get ready Canada, the reconquesta de america del Norte ha comincido. One poster here asked how we differitiate who can vote and who is not a citizen, it is hard.

Yo quiro Acadie, ahora!

Racist, nope, Fierons de Parler Francais, espagnol et anglais.

Typical leftwing hypocrisy. Pretend to be an American.
I'd be ashamed to be associated with anyone who slurs a whole nation, basking in his misplaced inbred moral superiority. Is this a common factor among far left hypocritical bigots?
Do Canadians a favour. When you travel take a oneway ticket.

How am I sluring a nation. Merely suggesting that if they are going to be boorish, try not to impune the reputation of all Canada while they are at it. There was also a certain amount of tongue in cheek on that comment. As I obviously don't expect them to do this.

I remeber traving with an a group once and one guy was multinational, and while living in Canada was not actually a citizen. We met some people and he started making an ass of himself,I felt embarrased to be associated with the guy. I rember thinking, don't say you are Canadian, but he did.
