WTF is Hyack?

A "Hyack" (or Hyak) is a word from Chinook Jargon (Chinook Wawa), a historical pidgin language used in the Pacific Northwest. It means "quick," "fast," "swift," "speedy," or "hurry."36e21f

Context in British Columbia
In the Lower Mainland (especially New Westminster, just east of Vancouver), "Hyack" is strongly associated with local history and community events:

Hyack Festival Association: Organizes major annual events like the Hyack Multicultural Parade & Festival (one of BC’s largest family-oriented parades) and a summer fireworks festival.

The name was chosen because it evokes speed, energy, and quick action.54e3d5

The term originally referenced the quick response of early volunteer firefighters in New Westminster.783bae

It’s pronounced roughly like “HIGH-ack.”
The word comes from Indigenous trade languages of the region and reflects the cultural blending in BC’s history. If you’re in the Vancouver area, you’ll often see it tied to New West community pride and celebrations.

The Hyack Festival (full name: Hyack Multicultural Parade & Festival in the Park) is a major annual free community event in New Westminster, BC (just east of Vancouver). Organized by the Hyack Festival Association since 1971, it celebrates cultural diversity, community spirit, and local history.b9e3c8

We're checking it out.

This Monday is the anvils.

new westminster anvil battery

The Ancient and Honourable Hyack Anvil Battery is a unique and historic New Westminster tradition. Dating back to 1871, the group fires a spectacular 21-anvil salute to the reigning monarch every Victoria Day in Queen’s Park. The only year it has ever been silent was following Queen Victoria's death in 1901. [1, 2, 3]

How the Tradition Works
  • The Technique: Instead of traditional cannons, the Battery places gunpowder on a playing card resting on top of a stationary anvil. A second anvil is placed upside-down on top of it, and the explosion is ignited using a long, heated iron rod.
  • The History: When the colonial government forbade the "Royal City" from using cannons for a standard 21-gun salute, local pioneers improvised with heavy blacksmithing anvils.
  • The Time: The salute traditionally takes place exactly at noon on Victoria Day, with the program leading up to it usually beginning around 11:15 a.m.. [1, 2, 3]

Hyack Anvil Battery having a blast with this evolving New West tradition
May 17, 2024 — The Ancient and Honourable Hyack Anvil Battery will fire a 21-blast salute to Queen Victoria in Queen's Park Stadium.
