Applying Scorpion genes in foodstuffs like corn to frighten insects away, Fish genes in apples to give a longer shelf life.

This is genetic engineering ,that goes beyond grafting and cross pollination.

Is anybody growing scorpions or fish or is it still corn and an apple?

Isn't 'genetic modification' the splicing of genes from another species?

What has created our current foods like bananas and corn is selective breeding. It is humans messing with nature on natures terms.

Genetic modification did not create corn and bananas as we know them today.
When you are doing hybrids you can go forward by selection and go backwards by reintroducing of genetics from a seed found in bee's wax or other conditions that kept ancient seed in hibernation.

Seed found from Babylon times is being hybrid with today's wheat to create a high yield wheat that is a perennial. Plant wheat like a lawn once and harvest for years without reseeding. It may be possible to pull off two harvests a season. That will feed a gosh awful lot of people for cheap and preserve soil as if man weren't involved. If the soil is healthy you don't need fertilizers and the plants have better immunity to rot and fusarium and droughts.

Sounds a lot better than those nasty insecticides.
What sounds better isn't necessarily better.

Taking a dive in production and keeping it all healthy is the better choice.
The reason we have praying mantis in Ontario is the Brits brought them in to eat insects. there are alternatives to pesticides .

Hindus freak out when I tell them animal genes are in their food ;) .

They now have apples that do not turn brown after they are peeled.
Tomatoes don't rot anymore.

as for organic produce . All produce is bereft of taste and smell like the days when I was a kid. I asked about this in an all organic store in Oakville and Toronto to older people working there.
"If this is so organic , why doesn't smell like it did when I was a kid. these onions do not make my eyes cry anymore. What happened?

they were stumped.

Onion tears is all about soil conditions. Low sulphur in the soil means less H2S in the onion.
Interesting.
But why is it then that most onions today do not make you cry, and no onion today makes you cry like in the good ole days of mom wiping them away.lol

Depends were the distributers sourced them from. City grown backyard onions will have more sulphur in the soil from fossil fuels but this is waning for lower S emission fuels used over the past 30 years.
