Thats a good one Bass!

I'm VERY surprised to hear that the age of consent is 14 in Canada! I think I was still playing with barbies at 14 lol.

I'm 110% with Bassman on this one, if it works, it works. Love and relationships are about fitting two personalities together, not two ages. Having said that, I dont like seeing 20 year olds with 60 year olds. It looks very wrong and you wonder what the hell these people could have in common besides a love for money!

14 is absolutley disgraceful!!!!

18 is a respectable age for consent.

As for the whole dating older or younger buisness, well i'd have to say that if your inlove stuff what people think and be happy.

ASLONG AS THERE OVER THE 18 MARK " HERE HERE"

Here it is illegal for any adult to date anyone who's not of "legal consent age". That would be 18. The exception to this law would be parental consent.

I personally support this law since it eliminates someone who's say 30 from dating a 16 year old child. Most parents would surely not give consent under those circumstances.

But remember that with the way the American system works an 18 year old can be arrested for having sex with a person six months younger than them. And, to add insult to injury, that person is labeled a sexual preditor for the rest of their lives. All because some dad gets a burr up his ass about his daughter having sex.

There needs to be exceptions made for those close to the same age.

Yeah it is complicated. In Australia, the legal age is 16 but for anyone to sleep with someone who is younger than 18, that is statutory rape. So basically, a 16 year old can sleep with another 16 year old or a 17 year old but nobody else. I find it strange. Its like how you can smoke cigarettes legally at 16 but you cant buy them till you're 18! Doesnt make any sense to me!

Personally I think if both parties are over the age of 18 people should mind their own buisness. There are more important things for us to be worrying about then what consenting adults are or are not doing.

As for the Candian age beign 14 it should be raised to 16. 14 years old is just way too young to make an informed decision. I agree with LRG about exceptions needing to be made in the USA. It is not fair for an 18 year old to be charged for sleeping with his 17 year old girlfriend because some parent doesn't like either the 18 year old or the fact that their child is having sex.

statutory rape is a person having sexual intercourse with a person under the full age of 19 years, who is more than 2 years younger.

That is incorrect. Before the recent change in our laws, it was legal for a 14 year-old girl to have sex with men. This was not statutory rape if consent was given by the girl.

Regardless, if people are above the age of consent they'll do as they please. I smirk though when I see so many older women and men on the prowl for younger partners. The women dress, walk and talk like well practised younger tarts and the men affect the clothes, hairstyles, jewellery and piercings of their target audience. I thought they'd feel ridiculous but they don't. Talk shows like the omnipresent Oprah have actually promoted this type of thing. And it's been a hot topic in celebrity and related mags for quite awhile. Looks like an industry to me.

I see nothing wrong in an older guy going out with a younger woman. A 70 year old with a woman in her 40s or early 50s is OK by me. If he goes out with a 30 year old what the heck has it do with anyone but the couple conccerned. The same applies to an older woman and a younger guy. Life's too short to worry about such things. Why don't people get on with their own lives and let others get on with theirs. Asking which looks the worse ... two adults the same age can sometimes be an ugly sight.

if it is 14-17/18 I think it's better for them to have someone that is their age or 1-2 years older... but if the person's already 20 it doesn't matter if the guy is 6 years older than her... it's just that when we get older we tend to think that people can already handle people much older than them..

I know people of 25 who are too stupid to make the decisions sex involves, and I expect there are people of ages younger than 16 who are very aware of the responsibilities etc. Problem is that when very young it can be unsafe medically. Girls who have sex at a young age are more likely to get cancer etc and are more at risk of STI's (maybe i made that up?). anyway it's not a simple subject. I think it would be sensible to have the age higher than 14, but with provisos and exceptions available for specific cases. Remember though that if people enjoy their sex they aren't going to report it to the police anyway so 12, 13, 14 year olds etc will always have sex if they really want to, and bad things will always happen, even if they are unacceptable and illegal.

Too Young or Old Enough?

Rate of maturation of both male and female is such a variable no one age is "right". It is an individual matter as is physical growth, hair color, talents, intelligence, etc.

I realize law enforcement have to set a circumscribed demarkation by naming an "age" but there is no
one age which would cover all situations.

People must remember every child - even young ones - are totally unique individuals who will react to an
event in a totally personal way.

Regarding sexuality and appropriate age - it is a roll of the dice and all adults can do is to educate and prepare their child for the possiblities or eventualities of life, and that the child should feel absolutely free
in discussing these matters. The most damaging thing parents can do is to "hope it never happens" or "it will go away" or some other fantasy. Sexuality is everywhere these days, visual images, characterizations of sexual interaction in film and television and electronic sharing.... and curious kids.

Forced or manipulated sexuality is another monster we have to prepare for.... it happens.

If you leave your child hanging out there to make solo uninformed decisions - you are leaving the door open for trouble.

maybe we should tell our children they're ugly so they won't have the confidence :D

that's how it worked for me. i thought i was unpleasant so assumed nothing would happen, so it didnt. i wanted sex from the age of about 11. I only realised how fantastic I am at about 24. now i know i'm gorgeous but have the brains to think about sex and what it means.

LOL - actually my sisters had me convinced I missed out in the looks department. There is nothing worse than having older sisters who are popular and divas and commanding all the attention.

I felt Cinderella was written for me - except the ending. The shoe never fit me either and no prince.
