How many here have beef fondue occasionally?

If you are afraid of toppling the fondue pot, maybe you should do your drinking after dinner. The fondue pot we have is very stable and would be very difficult to tip over.
Or buy an alternative like I have, or don't buy one at all... lol.

If you are going to use broth......Why not just make soup?....

For the same reason you don't simply dump your fondue ingredients into the deep fryer in one shot. Much simpler than fondue silly! lol.

The whole idea of beef fondue is to make every bite of beef steak, like the first, nicely browned, hot, bite of a good steak. In that respect, it is second to none. There is no alternative. If you don't think your kids can be trusted around the hot oil, don't invite them. It is as simple as that.

Which is why, like I said, we have the stone instead for now... because I don't trust my kids. Simple.

Karrie I guess it is just a matter of what you like. We have the stone as well and I think it is a poor second best to the fondue. We taught our kids fairly early (about 8 or 9 years old) how to use the fondue and how not to use it. Never had a problem.

juan, I'm not arguing with you. But my kids are 7 and 8, and I don't trust them around the fondue yet, thus I don't have one. It's not a slight against fondue. On that note I'm done with this thread as it's starting to sound like you're angry that I have fondue alternatives in my home. lol.

We finally had fondue last night. We used beef tenderloin, fresh large mushrooms, and large, raw tiger prawns. We also had a salad, and fresh, homemade bread, as well as a nice bottle of Cabernet Souvignon. The real treat with fondue is that the meal is very leisurely and relaxing and takes up to a couple hours to eat. We gotta do it more often.

I"ve had cheese and chocolate fondue. Good stuff.

Funny. We have both of the cookers and quite a few recipes for both cheese and chocolate fondue but we've never tried either for some reason.

Cheese is really good. My friend does both oil and cheese with meat and various vegetables at the same time - two different fondues, of course. I've never had oil fondue.

Last night was the first time we tried seafood. We did big tiger prawns and they were great. I see in some of the seafood recipes you can use swordfish and salmon and prawns...Whole new world out there....

Oil fondue is great because you can do nearly all things with it. Instead of a separate cheese fondue, you can make things like a beer batter and dunk your cheese into the batter and then into the hot oil. We have cut up trays of cheese squares, beef steak, chicken and even vegetables and fondued them all. We dunk nearly everything into the beer batter before the oil. Tastes better. We usually have our fondue with baked potatoes because when there are lots of you - it can take a long time to get to the rest of your meal (that you are fonduing). We use two fondues - one for each end of the table.
Do remember to put a good insulator between your fondue and your dining table. We thought the table pad and table cloth would be enough but it wasn't. I forever more had a bit of an outline on my table of that time.

My friend did a fondue party a while back with a cheese and a chocolate fondue. I would not consider a fondue meal complete if there were no chocolate involved.

At my house we are not too keen on open flames beneath bubbling pots of peanut oil either.
We looked around and found electrically heated fondue pots and that at least got rid of the burners.

Also in the for the sake of our cardiac systems we are experimenting with using beef and vegetable broth instead of peanut oil, not quite the same but it's just got to be healthier.

Since none of us fondue on a frequent basis, couldn't you just use olive oil? Still oil but at least it's a healthy oil.
Kids don't need to cook their own food in the fondue to enjoy it. We fondued every New Year's Eve for years and our kids loved it. Now they are starting the same tradition with their own kids. We just asked the kids what they wanted to eat and we each cooked for one kid. They could choose and use their own choice of dips.

That is almost exactly the way we handled it. By the time our kids were about ten or eleven years old they were cooking their own. Both our children are now married and have kids of their own.

Juan, I think we are giving away our age! Both our kids are also married and have kids of their own (thankfully, they all live here too).
