Apparently Stevens would not be suspended for most of those hits, as I heard someone point out yesterday. Most of the issue is lateral forward against forward.
Players aren't much bigger. They aren't held up anymore, that's why they can throw their weight around all over the ice.
key word there is 'much', and also the center line being removed has changed the game, allowing a build
up of speed from end to end, and I disagree about the stevens hits, and of course it's 'certain' hits
he did, and had a reputation for, they have been pointed out on tv, as comparisons to 'then' and 'now'
and how those hits would be penalties.
I am far from being an 'expert' on hockey, TP but I do see tallola's point and as I have said, if he straightens up and plays right then keep him on the ice - if not then 'warming the pine' is fine with me. I will say that maybe, just maybe Torres got carried away in the heat of the moment as his next hit was a 'clean' one.
I don't like violence in hockey anymore than you do - it drove me away from the game for years and only recenlty when this new crop of players who really do know how to play the game without the unnecessary bad hits was I persuaded to begin watching the game again. I still cringe when the players get into fights as it takes away from the real game, at least for me. I know, I know - fighting gets the fans into the game and is supposed to help the home team - still, there is nothing like a good clean hitting game where the superior skills of the teams come to the fore, IMMHO.
Yeah, I know what you mean about the fighting, I feel somewhat embarrassed when fights break out, as they
look rather stupid to me, BUT I have become more understanding why a 'real' fight can happen, (not
staged ones), and men are so different than women, as they can bash each other for a little while, then
pull apart, and skate away, completely 'over' the moment, and forget it.
If I fought with someone like that, I wouldn't forget it for the rest of my life. lol
So, I have come to the conclusion, that a fight is a 'vent', and heals a problem very quickly., and
yes, the fans love it, why, I'll never know.
I don't see as much violence any more either, the game is so fast now, and great skating, and the days
of the broad street bullies and bench clearing brawls is gone, and that is 'good'.
Of course in a contained area, a game played like hockey is played, by large grown men will be what it is, a
highly charged, fast moving game that is very physical and cannot be gentle, or without situations,
and that is the way the players want it, that is why they decided to play, it is their game, we must
all step back and let them play it the way they want, but within a set of rules, and those rules
for the most part are easy to enforce, but not entirely.
Everything isn't all about what 'real men' want to do and like, it is about all of us, and how
the game can reach out to everyone and still be very physical and exciting and contain very talented
players and hockey plays.
I hated that era of hockey, (still loved the game but not the behavior,)yet I watched it all the time, I remember one game in New Westminster, Westminster Bruins, (major junior hockey), where the bench emptied,
and all the players were on the ice fighting, blood everywhere.
I walked out of the rink area to the concession, and sat there till it was all over,
'I was the only one there'.
Never saw anything quite that bad in the NHL, but years ago there were some doozies.
