House GOP (and 9 Dems) block child marriage prevention law

It would be the International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act of 2010. A proposed law that would designate marrying a child a human rights violation and develop strategies to prevent such marriage around the world. Mary Robinson and Desmond Tutu have praised the US because they thought this was going to pass. The Senate approved it by unanimous consent. And the House GOP decided to vote en masse against it.

Question....Was it part of the "omnibus bill" or another "companion" bill that the republicans were against???

That's a ruse that politicians use to pass things...The republicans might have been in favour of the child marriage bill but the other side maybe tried to sneak something else in.

The bill was its own bill. It wasn't attached to anything.

And House Republicans voting en masse against it.

The Republicans are against everything and their main part of the party is frightened of the
Tea Party. When the Tea Party gets in full swing it will help the Democrats because people
are about to tire of these folks and the Republicans let them into their midst.
As for the bill, the international community should have acted years ago and the present law
on sex tourism should be made more severe as well.

Is the bill really necessary? Is child marriage an issue in the US? There comes a time when someone has to say no to new spending.

It reminds me of the GOP playing politics with late term abortion. It really isn't an issue, it just plays well to their base. This bill plays well to the Dem base. Perhaps once again it's a completely irrelevant spending plan just because it looks good in the news for Democrats.
