Prime Minister Stephen Harper asked P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz Wednesday to add his province to the list of those providing job protection for Armed Forces reservists returning from tours of duty.
There are only three provinces — Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan — where the law says employers have to hold jobs for reservists who are away on tours of duty. Ghiz said he'll look at making the legislative changes on P.E.I. too.
Ghiz said he's happy to accommodate the prime minister on this issue, and he's hoping to make the appropriate changes soon, possibly when MLAs return to the legislature this fall.

Should be a national law. You are called to serve your country, you should have your job waiting for you when you get back.

Oddly I totally disagree with this bill - I don't think legislation should interfere with private business rights to hire who they would like too.

This is totally something many people don't like because they like to be able to do things like have babies maternity leave etc..

I can understand why - but it should be realized those are "lifestyle choices" - much the same as medical leave. I don't think the workplace should be forcibly interfered with for things like those. I think it should be up to the businesses themselves to decide if they think materinity leave and retainance of mothers or war leave and retaining military in their workforce is something they would like to do. I totally see the policy as ultrasocialism and although I am a socialist I beleive in strong individual choice extending to business.

I think the government should be able to mandate it for governmental employment but I think that extending a law that requires people to retain individuals who leave for months is just plain unfair to the workforce.

The fact the war ins't even one of defence makes it even worse. There is no "need" to be in Afghanastan that has been demonstrated other than to interfere in the natural political environment of a country half way around the world.

While I think - military trained employees can be a great benefit in some occupations in others people that have faced war may not be as effective as employees because their personalities have been tested.

Also it isn't fair to employeers who have hired people and trained them and so on .. it should not be forced - much like offering maternity leave should be optional - or the ammount of sickleave. In some jobs there is very little job security offered I don't see why giving reservists job security where the rest of the populace doesn't have it is fair. While I think the government should totally be within their grounds to do it for their hiring practices I think forcing that on the public and private business is oversteping the reach government should have.

Where is sick leave allowances - what if the reservist was injured and can't perform their job at the same level etc..

I totally do not feel this should be forceable on private business. Nothing against reservists I think that if it was a person going to help a releif organization for 6 months in africa to have job security etc.. is on the same line - the military shouldn't get special treatment when there are other activities like taking a 6 month vacation - it's all individual choice - if it was a draft it would be slightly different - but it ain't.

They neglected their job to go to war - they chose war over their work - their work should be able to choose someone that is more loyal to them rather than other business. - much the same as someone who chooses to have a baby, someone who chooses to do releif work in africa or someone who chooses to go on a half year vacation. They are all choosing something that says "I'd rather do this than work for you."

It should be the employeers choice to say - yah I think that is more important too.. your job is here when you get back --- or but I really need someone to do this - if you arn't willing I'm going to have to find someone else.

I Disagree reservists are not full time army personale , if they are called away from a business why should that business have to shoulder the burden of keeping that position open until they come back . If you want to be in the army join full time and leave your job if not stay and work as a civilian but don't pretend to be a civilian and then jump up and leave when the army calls and expect your employer to put his/her business on hold for you .

First off, reservists are rarely asked to go to fight in a war, most cases I've heard they are volunteering to go, and have to train before they can go.

What does it matter if they are full time/ part time CF members? Is anyone here going to say that the contribution of a reservist carries less weight than an enlisted soldier? BullShyte to anyone who coughs that up. Some people want to make contributions to Canada in there own way, a reservist gets to see both worlds.

Sorry, but you very naive and you are on real slippery slope if you think you could just allow private business right to hire who they want.....there has to be some legislation to prevent abuse by companies who could discriminate against various people. Where would you stop if companies could have total control? Would you allow women not to be hired, for fear they may have children? Would you allow some companies to just advertise that they want to hire white people?

If you job can be protected if you are on jury service, then why should your job not be protected if you are serving your country (and therefore fellow citizens)? Remember, that reservists aren't just called up for war zones.....what if those reservists are called up to assist in wildfires that threaten your home? Do you still want them to possibly lose their job then???? If that's the case, I hope they stay at work and let your house burn down!

It took a while for Mr. Harper to get the hang of his new job, but he is getting more prime ministerial by the day & this is another of his good ideas. I just may vote Conservative again.

Awww, c'mon8O8O!!

It cost that tool nothing to say what he did. Will cost business and "us", that includes you, a lot of money to keep their jobs open. I believe a lot of places would anyway, without "Steve's" interference.

What the dipshyte should do is get the lads home instead of making Afhganistan safe for the Taliban, get his nose out of Bush's ass, keep some of his promises such as ARMED ice breakers for the North, realize there are a few things more important than TAX CUTS, and quit STRIKING THE POSE for the photo-ops.

If he did those things, I might vote for the @%$##^*&^%% too.

probably not though.

:angry3:(Bring home the troops...........SEND "STEVE")
