What i find interesting is that the church has abused it power... a power given to it by the people of Canada to carry out the legal functions of marriage. This is basically the only legal power we give our churches and yet they are not accountable for how they use it. If I as a member of the government hire straight people preferentially, i can be held to account for my actions. I can be sued/loose my job etc. for discrimination. However the church can discriminate all it wants. I believe that if two people come into a church and ask to be married then the church is obligated to marry them regardless of sex, race or creed.

What a pile of shit!

I don't think any church is abusing its power by only marrying who it wants to...they do not have a monopoly on performing marriages.

Correct, and a civil marriage is no more or less legal than a marriage performed by the clergy...never has been.

If a church feels squeamish about performing a same-sex marriage, that's fine...no one can force them to marry gay couples...I would think that gay people don't have much use for the church anyway, after how they've been treated...

I've been surprised by that more than a few times, Vanni. Not just with gays either, but by many people who have abused by various religions. So many still wish to be accepted by their church. I'll never understand it, but that does seem to be the way it works.

Harper is a good man standing by his morals and I fully support him in his brave and noble decision.

Of course only religious people have any morals.

How is the church supposed to circumvent the Ontario Human Rights code if it clearly states you can't discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation?
