That’s quite a tail.
A severely emaciated dog rescued from the side of a Durham Region road earlier this month will survive thanks in part to the rescue efforts of a Whitchurch-Stouffville town councillor and several other caring individuals.
Richard Bartley was driving south on York Durham Linet heading back to Stouffville on Aug. 7 when something caught his eye.
He said he kept driving, but then decided to go back.
“It was unbelievable, I was at a loss for words,” Bartley, the second-term Ward 5 councillor, recalled Saturday.
He found a young dog that was emaciated and tied to a road sign by a leash. She was also covered with open wounds and had dried feces stuck to her fur.
The dog—believed to be a three or four years old— is a mix between a shepherd and black Lab and could hardly move when Bartley found it.
“She didn’t look like she was going to make it,” he said, of they dog they’ve named Bella.
York Regional Police and several other town residents stepped in to help give the dog water, food and comfort.
Bartley said he kept feeding the dog submarine sandwiches that had been left over from an event he’d attended.
“I thought, if this dog doesn’t make it, I’m at least going to fill it full of sandwiches,” Bartley said with a chuckle.
The dog was immediately taken to animal services to be looked at but they thought the dog was too far gone to have a hope of surviving.
“They just thought she was too malnourished,” he said.
But it did survive. After that the dog went to an animal shelter and is now in foster care, where she has already gained fifteen pounds and is very gentle and calm despite her ordeal.
They hope now is that the dog will find a good home, but that probably won’t be a problem.
“Rumour has it that the lady who is looking after the her has fallen in-love with the dog,” Bartley said. “This is a very happy ending.”
Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact animal control services at 905-640-1900 or 1-855-642-8696.
