Ford Discontinues Production Of Most Car Models

Ford's decision to discontinue almost all of its car models in North America within two years will leave its Canadian operations intact, since they are focused mainly on sport utility vehicles and light trucks.

Jerry Dias, national president of Unifor, said his union's members at Canadian Ford plants won't be affected in the short term by the accelerated cost-cutting program announced Wednesday.

Negotiations surrounding the North American Free Trade Agreement are another factor, he added.

"I don't think you're going to see Ford make any sort of major announcement in the facilities where they're making the Fiesta and Fusion until after NAFTA's done."

Ford said Wednesday — when it announced first-quarter results — it's aiming for an additional $11.5 billion in cost cuts and efficiencies, bringing the total to $25.5 billion expected by 2022.

Ford previously predicted $14 billion in cuts by 2022.

As I commented previously - the sedan sector has been a mill stone around Ford's neck for years and years. It is long past time they threw in the towel here and concentrated on things they do well.

The loser's here are the people who own these horrible Ford cars and are looking at reduced supply of parts to maintain them.

Fortunately the modern automobile is basically disposable, so it doesn't mean what it used to mean.

Part supply won't be reduced.

Since the 70s Ford F series trucks have been the #1 selling vehicle in North America.

Why bother with cars that interrupt F series production?

Consumer driven. They want 4X4s.
And F-150s. The biggest selling single vehicle model in manufacturing history. The F-150 is such a huge seller that Ford executives aren't even allowed to take one as their company vehicle.
It is weird though that Ford can consistently make a damn good truck and yet consistently make shit cars.

You can't stuff a 20" wheel with a 60R profile into a Fiesta wheel well.

With all this snow and cold from global warming,
would you drive a Fiesta when you could have an all wheel drive Edge with 15cm more ground clearance for $25 more a month?

Besides where would you stuff the batteries?

BTW...Continuing a naming convention that started in 1908 with the Model T, Ford's Model E is planned to go into production in the spring of 2019.

Well if you care about important metrics like GDP growth and unemployment, it's pretty shit.

Otherwise, it's doing just grrrrrrreat.

Ford makes crappy cars. They always have ... at least, post-WWII they have. They make excellent trucks and tractors, though and it is smart of them to play up their strengths.

If it's not a truck it's a car with bigger wheels.

It' neither, now. It's an SUV built on a purpose designed SUV platform. There are some exceptions (Subaru) but most manufacturers do it that way, now. The early pioneers in the type of SUV that is popular, now, like Nissan used their light pick-up truck bodies and built a passenger compartment over the box. The grand daddy of them all, Jeep, never built a car. Neither did Land Rover. The old Chevy Suburban was practically a covered over five ton truck. Those are the SUV roots. They did not evolve from cars ... except for Subes.

I would be very curious to know the facts as to what percentage of the "Auto Sector" is actually for military use and stuff like that? (Drivetrains, axels, tires, transmissions)

Originally, they were built on pick-up truck frames. They have evolved into something else and the four SUVs that Ford bulds just three kilometers from where I am posting now are all built on a single, SUV specific platform that will produce neither car nor a truck.
Is a station wagon with 4x4 and big tires a car or a truck?
