This Monday, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General of Canada, is to undertake a visit to the northern regions of Ontario. The Governor General is going to be taking the time to celebrate a First Nations partnership that has helped to enrich northern Ontario living. Her Excellency is also to recognise a century of gold mining, before hosting another session of the Governor General’s extremely successful Art Matters forum in Greater Sudbury (where Her Excellency will also be joined by His Excellency Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond C.C.).
The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General has, of course, published a full itinerary of events (available here). Once again, the OSGG is proving why the role of the Governor General is such an essential one; it is a role that gives Canadians the chance to celebrate our culture without any political undertones, something which would not be possible with an elected representative of our head of State. It is unfortunate to know that Her Excellency’s term draws to a close very shortly, this Governor General is going to be leaving big shoes to fill at Rideau Hall.
