This Monday, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General of Canada, is to undertake a visit to the northern regions of Ontario. The Governor General is going to be taking the time to celebrate a First Nations partnership that has helped to enrich northern Ontario living. Her Excellency is also to recognise a century of gold mining, before hosting another session of the Governor General’s extremely successful Art Matters forum in Greater Sudbury (where Her Excellency will also be joined by His Excellency Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond C.C.).

The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General has, of course, published a full itinerary of events (available here). Once again, the OSGG is proving why the role of the Governor General is such an essential one; it is a role that gives Canadians the chance to celebrate our culture without any political undertones, something which would not be possible with an elected representative of our head of State. It is unfortunate to know that Her Excellency’s term draws to a close very shortly, this Governor General is going to be leaving big shoes to fill at Rideau Hall.

First and foremost, it seems a reminder is due that the travel plans of the Governor General tend to be on the recommendation of the Office of the Prime Minister. When travelling abroad, Her Excellency has done an incredible job of representing Canadians and communicating a truly Canadian message of peace, co-operation, understanding and respect for rights and freedoms. It should also be noted that State visits abroad account for only a very small part of the Governor General’s mandate; a vast majority of the Governor General’s time is spent travelling around Canada and communicating with all of us to “break down solitudes” (as has been Her Excellency’s mission since being appointed).

Our Governor General took the extraordinary, and perhaps revolutionary, step of creating a blogging and forum website for Canadians to get closer to the Office of the Governor General (it can be accessed at CitizenVoices.GG.ca, here). Her Excellency has arguably spent more time than any past governors general getting to know Canadians and promoting our culture and heritage, and for this the Governor General should be most generously applauded. One of the Governor General’s first steps upon appointment was to plan visits to each of the provinces; Her Excellency has also addressed our own Legislative Assembly here in British Columbia and carried out similar engagements throughout the rest of the country.

We have a Governor General now who Canadians can relate to, engage, and trust.

The place always has been and always will be a sh!thole of Brobdingnagian proportions-as per that famous McCleans mag article of old.

I speak as someone who lived in nearby Levack and visited Sudbury regularly-it is a place with no redeeminmg qualities of any kind- Stompin' Tom notwithstandin'.
