Re:NDP logical choice

quoted: "I think that the NDP did behave themselves very well during the whole thing.
Perhaps someday, they will be official opposition, and then we will see their true colours; are they as they acted, or will they be typical politicians"

I would be surprised of Canadian voters didn't consider the NDP to be the logical choice for government. The other two major partys have proven themselves to be 'dishonorable' [etc etc] over and over, so why not give the only other major party ONE CHANCE after all these years?

One complaint I've heard lately is that none of Canada's federal leaders is presenting any vision , a plan, some positive ideas.
But I see Jack Layton laying out all sorts of social and environmental ideas. Homelessness and poverty, toxic sites and Kyoto implementation - NDp has an eye on the horizon and thats what we need now.

Also, the big deal is that the other two HAVE BEEN IN POWER and that means they are entrenched in payola, they are allready "in the trough". At least we would get new people getting the graft with the NDP, if they prove themselves unable to resist that big cookie jar.

Really, its time. Just one term with fresh blood would break so many of the old boy's club links.

You sure wouldn't guess by looking at their web site. It doesn't say a thing.

I’m not convinced their going to get the votes as long as the Liberals are around.

That's all on the site someplace, Jay. You need to do more than admire Jack's handsome face and actually read things there though.

oh...

They don't seem to have a policy paper, like the one on the conservatives site, thats all I really ment. You gotta get the message out there.

You think Jacks handsome?

I for one am happy the Liberals survived. I didn't think they'd lose anything major last night but I'm still glad nothing's changed.

I do think it is time for a change however, and the NDP would be my choice to give a chance at running our country, but as it stands I could go another decade with the Liberals in power and my vote will always show that.

So I give a hearty and healthy
to all you righties out there wishing the downfall of a government that is, for the most part, doing all right.

So you think a government that can't defeat a bill that says they should step down is doing alright?

RE: Government Survives A

Would you step down if the only reasons for an opposing party submitting this bill was because of partisan politics?

Of course the opposition would try to get them to peacefully resign, they have been pushing this stupid Adscam issue for the last 2 years and holding up the parliamentary process all the while. I just want the house to do it's job, and those who obstruct the process should be thrown out. But that's just IMHO.

Besides, the fact that the Liberals lose one bill which is not a matter of confidence and win 17 bills that are matters of confidence should mean that the first bill was just yet another waste of time.

Yes, if I couldn't keep the confidence of the house, I would call an election. It's this crazy attachment to democracy I have. I know Liberals aren’t ones to do such things, but this isn't some third rate democracy we are trying to run.

Well I wouldn't. Democracy is more than just government run by the people, there are rules in guidelines in place in every democratic country to prevent the ousting of a government. I don't think I could vote Liberal anymore if they had resigned after that bill was passed. I'm glad they stuck with their beliefs.

If you go here you will find the policies on Kyoto, pensions, families and EI. The headlines on the right lead to other policies. There's a lot there and every sentence doesn't start by slamming the Liberals.

You think Jacks handsome?

I think you and Jack would make a beautiful couple, Jay. I think Olivia might protest though.

You are at odds not just with our system, but with Stevie Harper there, Jay. During the last election he said that if he won a minority the only thing he would consider matters of confidence was money bills. Of course he changed his mind when he thought he had a chance of moving into 24 Sussex this spring, but that's just a typical Harper flip flop.

There are rules I agree, but none of them say when you loose the confidence of the house you must retain power.

What beliefs? The belief they are the de facto government? :p

It would be very honorable in my eyes if they called an election over that issue....to me it would be holding democracy dear rather than dearly holding onto power.

Ya I've been to the site, and I just wish there was a platform sheet. A comprehensive sheet so to speak. Besides there is more to running a government than Kyoto, pensions, families and EI.

I think so too, but all we would do is fight over the little things, like why is he always in my wallet....

After thinking about it again I would have to say I agree with you whole-heartedly with this point. It would be honourable, but again the motion was not a matter of confidence. And with this being said i'll restate what I said a couple of posts ago:

"...the fact that the Liberals lose one bill which is not a matter of confidence and win 17 bills that are matters of confidence should mean that the first bill was just yet another waste of time."

Ya I've been to the site, and I just wish there was a platform sheet.

That disappeared with the new site, since there's an election coming and a new platform will be needed to address the issues that arise from that. I've got the old platform around here someplace (and maybe the one from the election before that too 8O), but I'll be damned if I'm going to type it all in.

Besides there is more to running a government than Kyoto, pensions, families and EI.

Like I said, check the headlines section...every issue that has come up since the new site was launched is addressed there.

Politics Canada had a good summary of all the party platforms up a while back. I'm not sure if it's still there.

I think so too, but all we would do is fight over the little things, like why is he always in my wallet....

Unless you've been donating to the NDP, he isn't. The NDP has a balanced budget policy that even includes tax relief for low and middle income earners.

I don’t think I'm at odds with our system at all.

It's not a matter of your opinion though, Jay. It is a matter of law set in precedent. You are at odds with it.

Besides he could have won another minority…..

Not "could have", would have. The Conservative lead didn't last as long as a campaign would have (as I predicted BTW). We'd be going to the polls on June 27th had an election been called. There is a chance that we'd end up with a Liberal majority. Nobody wants that, do they?

The NDP have behaved themselves because it is to their advantage. Look back to when they were the ones bringing down the government, then you had a group misbehaving (Conservatives bailed out the government that time).

At the moment it is to the advantage of the NDP to sit out of things. They have already shown they are a political powerhouse, they changed the budget to suit their agenda, everyone knows that now. The two major parties with their constant bickering will only bring each other down.

Paul Martin decided to postpone elections from the Fall into the Spring (and then in the Fall he'll push it to the Fall 2006 again, and then 2007, and so on, until his term is done). Martin and Harper have a good summer to improve their images. Martin is seen as a power hungry tyrant and Harper is seen as a power grasping dog. Neither of them are looking good. Many Anglo Canadians would probably even vote the Bloc in over these two parties.

I see the NDP taking one of the seats in Newfoundland (my riding where Father Des McGrath almost won) and I can see them taking some seats from the Liberals in Ontario and from the Conservatives in BC. They may even knock Belinda off her high horse by taking New Market-Aurora (although I'm still thinking it would go Conservative).

Lol I think i've made it pretty clear that I wouldn't mind another Liberal minority. I don't think they deserve a Majority though...not until we can see the Liberals can effectively and efficiently work with every House party to bring Canada to the next level of greatness...whatever that may be.

BTW this is why I support the Liberals so much, because behind all the allegations of corruption, cronyism, crap-tacular governing and everything else people have said is wrong with them, it's the liberal spirit of listening, compromise and action that will [eventually] show Canadians and the World how a country really should be run.

All other parties bring their own adgendas and tell people what they want, including NDP, and that is what I find wrong with every single one of them. I like thinking for myself thanks.

I think Belinda will hold her seat.

You really think McGrath could win next time out? I know a guy who worked on that campaign...his first venture into politics. He seemed disappointed and disillusioned when they didn't win the seat.

Several Ontario seats, a couple of Saskatchewan seats, one or two in Manitoba, and a few in BC are strong possibilities for the NDP the next time out.
