RE: Gomery nails Chretien

I will continue to vote Liberal. Excluding this most recent even, i can honestly say that i've seen the government, under both the Liberal and the Conservative reigns throw money away at worse things that are "legitimate". And do i really look to my politicians for moral guidance? lol. So government is "corrupt"...is this new? Keep in mind that if the previous Conservative government was so clean, why did they get reduced to three votes?

So I will continue to vote Liberal *yes, an albertan that doesn't vote for the conservatives do exist* because on more important issues like education, health care, woman issues and so on, the Liberal party best meets my moderate views.

I would have voted for the PC party. I might vote for CAP, as they are fairly moderate...but i will not vote for the Reform..er..Canadian Alliance...er...Conservative party or whatever they are calling themselves now. I will not vote for social conservatism. If i wanted moral guidance, ill go see a religious leader..not a political leader.

I tend to agree. It is easy to jump up and say, "my God the Liberals have wasted a hundred million dollars. Even the stupid gun control fiasco that I wish would disappear is pretty small compared to the total budget. Canada's annual budget is about three hundred and fifty billion dollars. All governments make mistakes. Mulroney chalked up about fifty billion dollars of debt every year he was in power. That debt remains an albatross around the neck of every government since Mulroney. The liberals have done some things right and they have paid down some of the debt. Harper doesn't think debt is such a bad thing. Do we want to use the Americans as a "good example"? I think not.

Fringe parties can still win riding seats based on votes from individual ridings, Rev. Look back at the provincial elections in Quebec when they had the now defunct Equality party (or is it defunct?). They were able to win several seats in the Quebec National Assembly. They got those seats without the proportional representation vote.

Look at the popular vote count. 40% wins a majority of seats. The top two parties consistently have a higher percentage of seats than the popular vote. Parties that are raising issues that concern Canadians get no voice at all because if they don't have seats they also can't get press coverage.

What this country needs in order to get back into functioning shape is the two main parties again: Grits and Tories. All this vote-splitting creates an unstable political atmosphere where nothing can get done. Every party disagrees on a lot of issues, and it is hurting this country by being unable to move in any direction strongly.

That's just silly. Most of Europe has some form of proportional representation or direct democracy. Only the US, Canada, and Britain don't out of western democracies. We also have the three least domocratic systems.

First past the post is inherently undemocratic because parties consistently win majorities with less than hald of the popular vote. Two party systems are stupid because they don't represent all of the people. They are especially stupid when both parties come from the same end of the political spectrum.

I will continue to vote Liberal. Excluding this most recent even, i can honestly say that i've seen the government, under both the Liberal and the Conservative reigns throw money away at worse things that are "legitimate".

Something that is less likely to happen in a proportional representation system.

And do i really look to my politicians for moral guidance?

Not if you are bright enough to tie your own shoes.

So government is "corrupt"...is this new?

By the Harperites are barking, you'd think so. Canada's first Prime Minister, a Conservative by the name of Sir John eh, was also involved in our first political scandal though. If we adjusted the cost in dollars, the Liberals would look like school boys out on a lark in comparison.

Keep in mind that if the previous Conservative government was so clean, why did they get reduced to three votes?

What I really want to know is how they hung on to those three. I'm also curious as to how Mulroney got elected the second time around. I've met exactly three people who admit to voting for him the second time he ran.

So I will continue to vote Liberal *yes, an albertan that doesn't vote for the conservatives do exist* because on more important issues like education, health care, woman issues and so on, the Liberal party best meets my moderate views.

You should likely adjust your views, or possibly examine Liberal policies and their record more closely, but at least you are voting for them for the right reason.

If i wanted moral guidance, ill go see a religious leader..not a political leader.

If I want moral guidance, I drink beer until the want goes away. Sometimes I shoot pool too.

I tend to agree. It is easy to jump up and say, "my God the Liberals have wasted a hundred million dollars. Even the stupid gun control fiasco that I wish would disappear is pretty small compared to the total budget.

See, my problem with the Liberals isn't with the money they spend. It's not even with the instances of corruption and cronyism. It's with their refusal to do anything substantial about the corruption and cronyism and with their policies in general.

We've seen them do dick on health care, Kyoto, education, foreign aid, native issues, poverty, trade, and about a dozen other things. The last time they did anything substantial, it was because the NDP forced them to.

OK, so it is brain damage I guess, nothing we can BLAME people for really.

Concentration is lost...
Swaying in the breeze with no ballast under you...
Drifting thoughts floating thru space....

Okaythen!
Gomery nails Chretian - do you think Chretien is pretty angry with Martin? It is like betrayal at the highest level.
Was Martin "left out of the loop" , and now he is getting his payback by nailing Chretien thru this Gomery Commission that he himself - Martin - set up?

-ya , I am just teasing, its okay that our topics drift around, we are just having a chat here, I know.

Still loving everyone,
Karlin

I'm really getting the feeling that the politics in this country are going nowhere because of this "Liberals-by-default" attitude. If the Quebec issue could finally be solved once and for all, much would change. Either Quebec seperates and we get it over with or we desperateley need to revise the constitution and the roles of the federal and provincial governments.

I do have a seperatist side but I'm willing to give Canada a chance. I'm optimist that Canada can change enough so that Quebecers are finally satisfied Canadians and the dynamics finally change in the country. I support the Bloc for what it stands for but I have to admit that it really is BLOCking the dynamics right now. If all BLOC voters voted for NDP we could finally have a different federal government!

Time names Gomery 'Canadian newsmaker of year'

A teaser:

Justice John Gomery is Canada's "Newsmaker of the Year," according to Time magazine, while rock star Bono and Bill and Melinda Gates have been named "Persons of the Year."

The magazine's special 2005 "Persons of the Year" double issue appears on newstands Monday.

Time said it chose Gomery because of his charm and passion during the sponsorship inquiry.

Gomery was educated at McGill University, and admitted to the bar in 1957. He practiced family law, commercial litigation and bankruptcy law for 25 years, before being appointed a judge of the Quebec Superior Court.

The sponsorship inquiry has made him one of the most noticeable names in Canada. [/end of teaser]

I am not surprised at all.
