Lots of juicy bits coming out now…

I love it. Liberals redirecting tax money into their bank accounts.

One guy on CBC yesterday said something to the effect "the Liberals have tripped and fallen right into the glue." :)

It’s time for a change. Pea says she will take thieves over stoneagers any day. I say thievery is older than the Stone Age and I will take stone over theft, at least I can do something with stone.

What juicy bits? Any politicians involved? These are the same kind of accusations that have been levelled at Mulroney over the years.

I'm not saying that there's no corruption, just that the Conservatives are just as corrupt and just as unwilling to do anything to address the problem at its root as a result.

Now consider what would happen under a system of proportional representation. Since the parties would be represented by the popular vote, opposition parties would be more involved in the day to day running of programs. Things like this would be caught a lot quicker.

Now why would the Conservatives decide they don't like PR? They used to like PR until they deluded themselves into thinking they could win an election, even get a majority. Why would they resist reforms...are they afraid that somebody might hamper their attempts at using the public purse as their own personal piggybank? That's very likely part of it.

There was a guy on CBC yesterday who said if any of these allegations can be corroborated, this is the worst scandal in Canada in 100 years.

There was another guy who said he knew what was going on and was passing all his "brown envelops" for 2 years to the RCMP.

If the Liberals get elected again after all this, I give up…..

RB,

Haven't you watched the TV or read the paper!!

Jean Chretien's brother and neice are directly involved with the scandal and if your going to try to tell me that the PM didn't know anything about it your about the stupidest person I know.

It's not like Mr Chretien has 32 siblings living all over the world and he isn't in contact with them for years. He knew EXACTLY what was going on, as did most of the senior politicians. How Paul Martin can claim that he was a senior Quebec MP and finance minister and still didn't know anything about the kick-back scheme. He was either full aware of the situation and ignored it or is completely inept at performing his duties. Either way he should be held accountable.

Constantly. From several sources. I tend to separate the editorials from the hard news though.

Jean Chretien's brother and neice are directly involved with the scandal and if your going to try to tell me that the PM didn't know anything about it your about the stupidest person I know.

That's an allegation, Tibear. It's been offered up by one man who is being sued for over $30 million by the same people he's accusing. The Liberals say they can refute it.

He knew EXACTLY what was going on, as did most of the senior politicians.

Prove it. I have no doubt they knew what was going on, but if the trail stops with the back room boys, then there is no proof. It's called plausible deniability.

How Paul Martin can claim that he was a senior Quebec MP and finance minister and still didn't know anything about the kick-back scheme. He was either full aware of the situation and ignored it or is completely inept at performing his duties. Either way he should be held accountable.

He is the one guy in the Quebec wing of the Liberal Party who actually may not have known what was going on. Keep in mind that he was basically at war with the Chretienites for most of his career. They wouldn't be offering up anything that could be used against them.

He also may have been fully aware of what was going on.

Again though...prove it.

The shrill screams of senior politicians being involved in a criminal conspiracy are all politics. They aren't good politics either...Harper and his buddies need to learn that. Canadians are not as prone to believing scandal-mongering as the US electorate is. Sometimes there is even a backlash. Harper bases his campaigns and his politicking very much on the Republican model though.

There was a guy on CBC yesterday who said if any of these allegations can be corroborated, this is the worst scandal in Canada in 100 years.

You mean even worse than Tuna-gate?

It's a very serious scandal, but even MacKay said that it is likely that some of the testimony is pretty questionable. Of course a little while later he was yarking about a vast criminal conspiracy.

There were a lot of man on the street interviews indicating that most people, especially in the 905 area code where the Conservatives need seats, really don't care.

There was another guy who said he knew what was going on and was passing all his "brown envelops" for 2 years to the RCMP.

And there will no doubt be criminal charges if that's true.

If the Liberals get elected again after all this, I give up…..

If the Conservatives don't start speaking in more measured tones, the Liberals are likely to gain seats outside of Quebec from this. People are tired of them trying to scream people down in Question Period. People are tired of every question being about a scandal (real or imagined) instead of the business of governing.

That doesn't mean that they can't criticize, but it does mean that they should tone down the rhetoric and deal in fact and that they should try to sing more than one note.

I know. It really does make them look silly at times.

I guess though, this is what the opposition does. We just haven’t seen the liberals sitting in the opposition for awhile to criticize them for doing the same thing.

That’s not surprising.....they put the liberals there. They worked hard for this.

Whew! Rev, I'm astonished. For a guy who supports the party of Ed "I'm Outraged" Broadbent, I'm stunned at your calm and reasoned responses to the 'hang 'em high crowd'.
Like you and a lot of the 'man on the street' interviews, a goodly percentage of our population doesn't seem either surprised or offended at the continuing saga of Quebec Political Corruption. It's like Coronation Street in French. They change the players over the years, but the plot's still the same. I think it is a genetic thing brought with them from their beloved France where corruption in politics is expected, if not rewarded.

People**** are tired of every question being about a scandal (real or imagined) instead of the business of governing.

**** "People" should actually read "Liberals".

As for the Canadian people, they are eating this up. There is nothing quite like a scandal, and particularily one in which people get to watch those that are in power fall, to get people interested in politics again. If you need proof, just look at the millions of hits being generated for the forbidden fruit Gomery Inquiry info. While English Canada has been a little slower than our French brothers in picking up interest in it, it has become the talk of the water cooler now.

From this point on, the Liberals will be hobbling towards their immending fall as their reputation and voter base gets whittled away.

The Conservatives will be forming the next government. The only question left is whether it will be minority or majority.

I think you are being a wide-eyed optimist. In order for the Conservatives to form a Government, they are going to have to win between 36 (minority) and 56 (majority) seats. While they may win a few in Ontario and a couple in the Atlantic Provinces and maybe BC, their chances of winning even a minority position are slim. What is more likely to happen is the reinforcement of the BQ in Quebec and an even more evenly distributed minority Liberal Government. My personal bet is that little will change if the vote is held this spring/summer. It takes time for a public to get royally P.O.'d with a Government.

Inform yourself please. It all started in Ottawa.

   I have to say you are right coaster. We must talk to the "same man in the street" people. The conversation at starbucks last night was about how the conservatives have handled this, not about the crimes the liberals did. This is where canadians never get any justice, because its reduced to a circus act. Yes, the liberals have done wrong, and you have the right to gloat but don't over do it, it takes the focus away from the crime, and people only end up looking at your actions. Just a thought, I think I put it nicely to :p

It was completely focused on Quebec and conducted by Quebec Liberal Party lieutentants and Quebec based Advertising Agencies.

I won't argue with you there. I've always wondered if I was OK! :D :)

I seem to remember a bit of a scandal in BC involving Liberal party election tactics not too long ago. I believe ther were criminal charges. I also cannot, for the life of me, remember a government of any stripe in BC that did not go down in scandal, whether that scandal was real or manufactured by the opposition.

The conversation at starbucks last night was about how the conservatives have handled this, not about the crimes the liberals did. This is where canadians never get any justice, because its reduced to a circus act.

Same here. The kid at the beer store just asked me how to join the NDP. He's pissed right off at the Liberals and the Conservatives. I can't tell you exactly what he said because it was extremely foul, but as much or more of it was aimed at Harper as at is was at Martin. I've heard the same thing time and again.

Quebec Political Corruption?

Actually it all started in England before Canada was even a country. It's part of our political heritage.

Careful there, Dukee...this is the kind of thing that got Bob Rae elected in Ontario, much to even his surprise. It's also the kind of thing that led to the demise of the Liberal Party in Manitoba and Saskatchewan a few decades ago. That created a lot of NDP governments. That makes me happy as hell, but I know it scares the hell out of others 8)

RE: Gomery Commission is

The talk radio out here is quite fascinated that the CBC.ca web site does not have the Gomery inquiry on it. The upcoming transit strike in T.O. is the big news of the day.

Personally I find that odd that they are ignoring this issue??? Any sensible thoughts?

RE: Gomery Commission is

I dunno, it's all that's been on TV, the lead story right now their site right now is, Political parties gauging impact of sponsorship revelations. It's been on all of the news all day long, made the call-in show again, and seems to be a preoccuptation of CBC in general.

I suspect that the criticisms are became they aren't calling for Martin's head on a pike, preferring to cover the story instead of joining in the radical right rhetoric.
