Yes. A re-telling of events that allegedly occured. This is not to say they preach to go and kill your wife if shes humping the neighbor.

It doesn't happen that way. I'm not Jewish, but I have attended a sermon and I have seen nothing that would indicate that they teach to kill.

I have also been to Christian churches, many times, I have heard nothing about Christianity promoting death to non-believers.

Now, do priests do that? I am very sure they do. Many people confuse priests with religion.

For example, the Pope is considered to be Gods representative on earth. Really? And I suppose God told him to preach from the lap of luxury also. This is the part I despise about religion. What the religious institutions have done with it.

They take people who have faith and twist that faith into "God fearing" people. If a Christian actually fears God, then they have listened but not understood.

Since Christianity was all about love, love thy neighbor, love thy enemy, religious leaders have slapped into all this love, you can only love the opposite sex etc....

This is why I tend to differentiate between the institutions of religion with someones faith.

Firstly, of course the Rabbis in the synagogues and that Priests in the churches do not tell their congregations to kill the unbelievers...in the world today, they would not last long if they did...yet at one time they did...you've read of the Salem Witch trials, I'm certain...and the Crusades?

One of my favourite religious sites

These are the laws of the Old Testament...which according to the New Testament, Jesus says, should be followed to the letter, and other times he says should be ignored...so which is it JC?

Anyway...I too am frustrated with the affluence of organized religions...for if they were true to their teachings, they should have given all to the needy...and not be eating every meal off plates of burnished gold...

But I am just as frustrated at those that would follow blindly anything that the church says, without thinking it through for themselves...

Yes, in that respect, religion is very much like partisan politics...

Of course I have heard of them. That's religious politics.

I don't think so , since JC said the Old Testament is defunct for He was the “lamb".

Well no argument there.

No argument here either.

They were a slaughter of the unbelievers dressed in the trappings of protecting the sanctity of the church...

Of course in Salem, many devout Christians were burned as well, for not being devout enough...

In Matthew 5, Jesus says:

5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Here JC is saying that all the Old laws still apply...

Yet in Romans he is saying that they don't:

7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Just more of the inconsistencies that plague this source for Christian morality...

Actually Vanni, at this point JC is speaking of the Least of the Commandments. Not THE Commandments.

Yet in Romans he is saying that they don't:

7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Vanni you are taking things out of context, 7:6 refers to the sacrificial laws that were done away with NOT the ten commandments you are implying.

There is no doubt JC asked to maintain the Old Testament, his teachings are an extent of it, not a replacement.

It is organized religions that injects crap into JC's teachings. An example, talk to any priest and he will tell you homosexuality is a sin. Biblical theology begins not with Church tradition and dogma but with the biblical texts themselves. Biblical text never references (to my knowledge) homosexuality is a sin.

Now which average person can decipher the bible? Not many. This is why Karl Marx claimed "religion is opium for the masses". Because they are told what it means to keep them under control. Now if everyone on the planet had a certain level of education, watch how organized religions cease to exist and is replaced with individual faith.

Well you guys have certainly covered every possible nuance, every possible complaint, every possible compliment on the matter of religion.

Extremely thorough.

But !

There's one remaining matter, that most religions have visited: the worship of icons.

You seemed to have a few on this thread exhibiting longing for avatars.

Is this...

ALERT: referendumcanada.ca & same sex marriages 1
by agent humble

An organization calling itself "Defend Marriage Project of United Families Canada" is running a website called referendumcanada.ca where they are using a 'non-partisan' poll to collect personal information and solicit e-mail addresses on the same-sex marriage issue.
This has sucked in more than one of my friends.

Please pursue other avenues of expressing your views on the issue of same-sex marriages in Canada. You DO NOT want to be giving your personal information and the e-mail addresses of your friends and allies to these people.

((The first link is to the "non-partisan" poll (hah!) and the second is to the organization behind it.))

The church I go to has a 1000 seats filled twice every Sunday morning. It has two huge movie screens on both sides of the altar. You know what that means? I don't have to fumble for a hymnal. It also means you get to see a movie.

They fill up 6 tankers a year with food, medicine, various tools and other supplies, to various countries in Africa, and each Sunday one of the foreign missionaries speaks of what the new testament James spoke of good works is needed beyond just faith.

I'm not really churchy about it all and find a kindred spirit in Buddhism most of all, but I've come to find that the straw men stereotypes we fight over are just that.

Just that.

Fellowship Bible Church Winchester Virginia.

My daughter lost a ring down the sink and when I looked at that rusted iron pipe, when I really wanted to see was PCV pipe I asked a friend who referred me a retired plumber.

I go to pay him and he wants my daughter to pay by playing her violin at church.

That screwed up my Sunday morning news program ritual, a church I went to most often, being the most pathetic of all news junkies.

So now I got this problem whenever I open my mouth too wide (hey ? Knock it off) when trying to sing parts of a hymnal I start to yawn.

I weed out all of the ideology and focus on the useful there, and learn a thing or two where previously I thought had no answers or interesting riddles.

If you want to talk about inflexible opionions, then look no further than the left.:

go ahead, finish the thought!!
What inflexable left actions, opinions, what? What are you referring to?
Or is that just another small "m" conservative tactic that is supposed to convince us just cuz'? Or just Cuz you said it? {note-"m"=mind]

I wonder if we could/should move away from left-right divisions in politics?
- is it still made up of this definition:? -
left = social programs
right = no programs, let things work out according to merit and the free market.

and:
The left needs taxes for their programs, whereas the right reduces taxes.

So, am I hanging to the LEFT if I say this :
"Note-for those who pay no taxes, it won't help them much, but thats ok for the RW because those disabled people will 'go away' if there is no tax base to support them. {note:'go away' means die of exposure or hunger]

RW wants wars, it supports many industries
Left wants peace, so resources can go to 'programs'.

These LW-RW definitions are so generalised and prone to rhetoric, which is partly why I wish we would stop looking at it like this. Generalising never accomodates anyone.

And then there are the other politic
- IS Fascism is extreme RW? Or is it more like communism?

And finally - IS the ARMY LW or RW? - since they have ONLY government money to support them, and they work together like a commune, it seems like a LEFTIST organisation.
But they are the baby of the Rightists.

Whatchathink? Toss the LW RW idea?
