What we need to do is get real, but even the authorites who are now 'allowed' to speak about global warming publicy [on TV] are not saying "reduce fossil fuel emissions". There is still some taboo about fingering fossil fuels.

Mind you, methane plays a huge rols, but of what humans CAN do now about GW/CC [global warming, climate change] is reduce CO2 emissions, and those mostlky come from burning fossil fuels

Well, here is an article that does say it. Good. More please.....

http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2006/12/11/arctic-greenhouse.html
The only way to prevent the rapid loss of polar ice is to implement aggressive measures to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels, Tremblay said.

Ahhhhhh, finally.
This article is about melting of polar ice, which the author predicts will be GONE by 2040. The results of that will be huge as the ocean levels rise and the currents change and then the land exposed will absorbv more sunlight/heat. Its not going to help us at all to ignore the actual cause and the one thing we can do to prevent more warming from the greehouse effect.

Scenarios simulated on supercomputers suggest sea ice could diminish enough within 20 years to speed the retreat of Arctic ice four-times faster than at any other time in the observed record.

Actually, it isn't just GW that is turning out to be a problem, although it's a biggie. Between the bunch of us we've also managed to threaten our sources of fresh water, bio-diversity is going down the tube, the ozone layer hole is bigger, etc. These things are definitely attributable to we, ourselves, and us. GW we have no doubt had a hand in but by how much is debatable. It would make sense to use good sense in everything we do that could affect the planet; the trouble with that is that gov'ts are involved, and gov'ts are notoriously, ineffective, inefficient, expensive, and retardant.

Lots of things can be done: I changed from having shares in petroleum companies to shares in alternative energy companies, reduced my own emissions by a great deal (that means, fuel consumption, how much garbage I get rid of, etc.), recycle damned near everything, and quite a few other things. It all saved me money as well as reduce my negative impacts on the planet.

Global Warming

I agree that we must reduce pollution if only for our health. But I have a hard time with some of these doomday advicates. The melting ices from the ice ages are what formed our continent. They have found mamoths frozen standing up right while they were eating, this has been shown on Nat. Geographic. It would be a little nieve not to realize that when the earth tilted, moving the North Pole southward, that the climate would not become warmer and the ice would not melt. I agree that maybe we are not helping but to blame us for everything is a little to much. You never hear of these advocates mentioning the natural change of the earth's climates, some places get cooler and some get warmer. I would believe them more if they spoke of both sides of the story. May husband and I do out part by recycling, our next car will be the most fuel efficient or best quality hybrid we can find, our heating system is a thermopump and bi-energy. Here's hoping that some day someone will tell us the whole truth about global warming by not hiding one aspect of it. It would be very interesting to know the history of our climate then we could judge for ourselves. Because the story today is so one sided we know that some people have to be making money with it, that is human nature.

yabut ...

Thanks to both of you for making those changes that will reduce pollution.

As for the natural changes, yes, good point, they are in play here. I think what I look at is the "added changes" that fossil fuel emissionss are causing, and the suddenness of changes now, whereas natural climate changes do not happen so suddenly, allowing things to adapt. With human-induced global warming, there is no time to adapt genetically and very few species can adapt very well with changes in their own behaviors - gees, even humans have a hard time changing habits.

The big picture is that we took the millions of years of stored carbon from under the surface of earth and spewed it into our atmosphere. At a rate of 500million metric tonnes per yer of CO2 going into the air, there MUST be some consequences, SOME reaction, and I believe we are seeing that reaction as being global warming. Scientific consences agrees with me, or I with them perhaps. [lol]

Anyways, keep up the good work of reductions in your FOSSIL FUELS EMISSIONS, the primary cause of the climate changes we are seeing now.
