CBC airs a lot of programming that specifically deals with Canadian issues, from a Canadian perspective. I wouldn't say it's a pillar of Canadian identity, but rather a reflection of Canadian identity - things that happen in Canada or the world and how it affects us, specifically.

Identity and television don't belong in the same sentance in my opinion. The CBC may produce historical documentaries, news pertaining to Canada and Canadian Content, but I cannot see how it is a reflection of Canadian indentity. PBS airs the same thing, American history, regional news and so forth, how does this constitute a television station being a reflection of American indentity? I can't see it.

You should understand that many Canadians had 1 electric media outlet for most of thier lives, we had 1 TV station and 1 radio station in many parts of the country, it had to reflect national values and it for the most part did, and it still trys. So we tend to trust the CBC because it's our station, it belongs to us.If you have 1 good public outlet you don't need 500 channels of private shit.

I know you can't see it, but that doesn't make it any less true.

PBS showing things from an American persepctive is a reflection of American identity, but not all Americans, of course. It shows how regional issues and history affect Americans and how that has shapes them, for the most part. The same is true with CBC, or at least that's what they try to do in many instances.

Come on, ITN, Wayne and Shuster are were only appreciated by Canadians. :D

Well ITN,

Here is a little reading for you:

The CBC is Canada's only truly national public broadcaster, providing traditional and new media services in both official languages as well as eight First Nations languages.

In specific terms, the CBC today is:

* Two national television networks, CBC Television and la Télévision de Radio-Canada;
* Four national radio networks: Radio One and Radio Two, plus their French-language equivalents, la Première Chaîne and la Chaîne culturelle;
* Two financially-independent specialized news networks, CBC Newsworld and RDI, focusing on news and current events 24 hours a day, seven days a week;
* In the Far North, radio and television services in English, French and eight First Nations languages;
* Since September 2001, three new speciality television channels:

1. ARTV, our very high calibre cultural channel;
2. Country Canada, in which we have just acquired full ownership, which reflects all regions of Canada; and
3. The Documentary Channel
* Most of these new services are partnerships — a topic I will discuss in greater detail later;
* Finally, Radio Canada International, our international radio service broadcasting around the world in seven languages.

Now let's turn to money matters. For fiscal year 2002-2003, we are receiving $916 million in public funding. This is supplemented by $258 million in advertising revenue and almost $206 million from specialty channels and other services.

By comparison, the BBC, which broadcasts in English only, has a budget of more than $6 billion.

The BBC is not a state broadcasting company, and even if it were, the BBC is a global broadcaster, with offices all over the world, you cannot compare the BBC budget with that of the CBC.

As Darkbeaver mentioned, I can understand an "emotional" attachment to the CBC by portions of the population, and like you said, it's not my tax dollars. But we can still still talk about it right? That is still the purpose of the forum, I think.

You have to weigh the pros cons, if you think $1 billion of your hard earned money can't be better spent, then fine by me. Personally I prefer the PBS approach, if people want to watch it, people have to fund it, I don't see why every single taxpayer should be paying for a television station.

Especially as they frequently have single digit ratings.

That could have been said, and often was, in 1980. Even then it seemed antiquated; now it demonstrates crippling self-delusion. When Rabinovitch refers to a broad cross-section of the public, he seems unaware that the CBC stopped reaching a broad public long ago. Each CBC program gets only a tiny sliver of the TV audience. When he says the CBC must have shows directed to "dedicated but smaller audiences," he forgets that all its programs go to small audiences. The CBC has no other kind.

Why don't we just say screw the first nations and the Inui and let them start up their own TV networks. In no time CNN would be on dog sleds to give coverage to these northern communities. Right?? The CBC has a share of audience very close to CTV and CBC covers the whole country. Thank goodness most real Canadians want to keep the CBC.

Two questions.

1) The CBC broadcasts in English and French, if they were so concerned, shouldn't they be broadcasting in their local dialects?

2) You have to explain to me the difference between a real and a fake Canadian.

God, ITN, you don't read anything.

I've already said that the CBC broadcasts in English and French, plus eight first nations languages. I don't care if you agree or not. This is a Canadian issue for Canadians to handle and we are doing quite well without your help thank you. Real Canadians understand.

I don't watch a lot of CBC for a few reasons.
1) Anything from the world news, I can find online or in a newspaper
2) It's got a huge leftist bend to it.

And I think it should be privately financed instead of a public company.

The CBC is BORING, and it's programming is as poor as that of Global. It is slightly more entertaining than the drek on PBS tho. Small wonder my TV is off most of the time.

Considering all the other crap we throw our money into, the billion dollars spent on the CBC is nothing.

Also considering we need something with Canadian content on the air ways,cutting the CBC from fed funding would be nuts.

This one is my fav....because we all know when the other Canadians publish things and it isn't through the CBC, it just isn't Canadian.
