Ok folks, I got into pretty interesting debate with one of my family members tonight and it came to the gay marriage.

I tried to defend the position that 2 gays or lesbians can raise perfectly straight child. I was born in a family which was left as a single mother raising me, I never had a male perception when it came to my maturing. Lots of my friends were raised in the single parent families all of them are straight and I somewhat can prove it. So I was thinking can same gender couple raise straight child, I absolutely believe it. I mean if 1 parent family can do it why not them?

So I am asking if gay couples can raise normal children? If not why? If yes why? Your participation is appreciated. ;-)

IMO being gay is not a choice for 99% of homosexuals. Your born gay. Therefore being raised by gay parents will not make you gay. You may end up being very accepting of homosexuality. You might perhaps experiment with same sex partners. I know qiute a few straight girls with a lesbian experience but don't know any straight guys who can say same.

Normal? Being gay is not abnormal, at least it's not these days. And i suppose it never was, it was just hidden very well (out of fear). I bet we'd all be surprised at the people in history who were gay but just never told anyone. There's already lots that we know about!

Straight people raise gay children all the time, so why would a gay couple not be able to raise a straight child? You have to look at both sides. That being said, i strongly believe that you are born gay or straight, and the way you are raised, what you read or see, or even what you EAT :)-P) has no effect on whether you are one or the other.

"there is no scientific evidence that parenting effectiveness is related to parental sexual orientation: lesbian and gay parents are as likely as heterosexual parents to provide supportive and healthy environments for their children"; and "research has shown that the adjustment, development, and psychological well-being of children is unrelated to parental sexual orientation and that the children of lesbian and gay parents are as likely as those of heterosexual parents to flourish."

- The American Psychological Association Resolution on Sexual Orientation, Parents, and Children (adopted July 2004) [taken from Wikipedia]

Happy parents are better parents than unhappy parents.

Ask yourself this question:

If Straight parents can raise children who turn gay in the first place, then why would gay parents have control over their children turning straight? It happens when born, not by influence.

If influence had anything to do with it, then your friends in high school would probably have kept you straight from all their talk of girls and porn mags, etc.

Well, if you think anyone ever raises a perfectly straight child, then I suppose that it would be as likely for a gay parent's child to come out straight as gay.

But personally, I don't think most people are ever 100% straight or 100% gay. Sexuality is an issue of a sliding scale of preference. And I think environmental influence does impact that a bit. As such, I think that children of gay parents will feel it's more acceptable to show interest in the same sex to some degree, and that will impact how much they manifest as bisexual.

Now on to the question THAT raises... is it a 'problem'? Heck no.
