Not shocked that the media is trying to play all sides on this.

Ford is far ahead and the other parties are just begging for scraps.

Ontario Liberals suspend Oshawa candidate over social media post

Ontario’s Liberals have suspended their candidate in Oshawa over an inflammatory social media post.

The suspension for Viresh Bansal comes after several Liberal candidates called on leader Bonnie Crombie to dump him.

Bansal posted a response in 2023 to an NDP statement on the killing of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the government had “credible allegations” linking agents of the Indian government to the fatal shooting in B.C.

Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives unearthed the posting.

Bansal wrote an apology after the World Sikh Organization of Canada called on Crombie to withdraw him as the Liberal candidate.

Bahoz Dara, Crombie’s campaign spokesperson, did not elaborate on the suspension.

“You can thank India for cleaning trash people. Ask your gay friend ↕JustinTrudeau to do the same,” Bansal wrote in the 2023 posting.

Bansal apologized on Tuesday.

“I want to sincerely apologize, especially to the Sikh and LGBTQ2S+ communities,” he wrote in a social media post. “My words were offensive and wrong, and I take full responsibility for the harm they caused.”

Crombie condemned the statements on Tuesday, but didn’t drop him.

“He managed to offend two beloved groups in one tweet, and this is completely unacceptable,” she said Tuesday. “It is not who I am. I don’t stand for this. It is not who the Ontario Liberal Party is.”

Vicky Dhillon, a Liberal candidate in Brampton East, called for Bansal’s removal on Thursday.

“I have spoken with many Ontarians and residents in Brampton East who are disgusted by Bansal’s rhetoric and actions,” Dhillon wrote in a statement.

“His apology is simply not enough and does not repair the hurt that he has caused.”

Jawad Haroon, the Liberal candidate in Mississauga-Malton, also called for Bansal’s removal.

“Since his history of despicable comments has come to light, I have repeatedly heard from residents of Mississauga-Malton who have expressed anger and disgust at his hateful remarks about members of our community,” Haroon wrote.

“These are views that I share.”

How did Ford ever become premier of the People's Fagtard Grommer Republic of Ontario anyhow?
People got sick of 15 years of the McWynnty dyke-bitch socialist republic govt still trying to blame the previous Conservative govt for all of the McWynnty govt's fuck ups. And the fact that ANY criticism of the Wynned Bag's shitty policies was constantly shouted down as "homophobia".
And the fact they literally gave away billions of dollars to their cronies and/or set them up to massively profit from govt contracts. Just like they love accusing the Conservatives of doing.
Oh, and the sex-ed curriculum that was drafted by a convicted pedophile. So the "Grommer Republic of Ontario" was actually Liberals.

If Ford wins a majority he would do something not done for many decades in Ontario -- win 3 straight majorities. Historically the third one is usually defeat or a minority.

Who called Ontario the People's Fagtard Republic again? Just responding in the vein you commented in. Don't be a dick about it.
Just trying to fit in with the local culture.

Talking sense to somebody who denies or doesn't care that most child molestation, hetero and homo, is perpetrated by men who identify as cis-hetero is a waste of the breath of life.

Ontario NDP candidate exits over past comments about Black women
The late withdrawal is unlikely to really affect her riding’s race results

Author of the article:Jack Moulton

The late withdrawal of a London-area NDP candidate who crashed out on the provincial election campaign trail over past comments about Black women may be spectacular – but it’s unlikely to really affect her riding’s race results.

Elgin-Middlesex-London, held by the Progressive Conservative since 2011, lost one candidate last week when New Democrat Amanda Zavitz announced she was quitting after comments she made in a lecture surfaced. Her name remains on the ballot for Thursday’s election.

Rob Flack, seeking re-election for the Tories, won with more than 50 per cent of the vote in the 2022 election, 33 percentage points ahead of his closest rival. One political observer says in that context, the exit of Zavitz will have little real effect.

“It wasn’t overly competitive (in 2022) and I suspect we wouldn’t see it be too competitive this time around either,” Fanshawe College political science instructor Matt Farrell said of the riding that takes in south London, St. Thomas and Elgin County.

A part-time professor of sociology at Western University and business owner, Zavitz’s resignation last week came a day after the Progressive Conservatives issued a statement quoting comments she made about her “secret desire” to be a Black woman.

“My secret is that I want to be a Black woman,” Zavitz, who is white, said in a video of her talk that’s been taken down from YouTube, “because I think Black is much more beautiful. The easy answer is that I want to be Bell Hooks (the penname of American author Gloria Jean Watkins), and Bell Hooks was a Black woman.”

Zavitz also said she wished she had lived-experience of poverty and addiction. The Tories accused Zavitz of “trivializing” the life experience of Black Ontarians.

Her exit caught the attention of the British news media, which dubbed it an “attempt to be woke” that “backfired.” Zavitz has apologized.

NDP Leader Marit Stiles called Zavitz’s original comments “deeply concerning” before her resignation was announced.

Flack’s campaign did not return a request for comment from The Free Press, but he re-shared a party social-media post highlighting the comments.

Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie's gamble falls flat
The veteran politician's bold move to walk away from being mayor of Mississauga didn't pay off but she plans to stay on as leader

Just what in the heck is Bonnie Crombie going to do now?

Not only did she come up short in her bid to become premier of Ontario, she will not be a member of the provincial legislature since she lost her election bid in Mississauga East-Cooksville to Silvia Gualtieri – a stunning defeat and rebuke of the veteran politician.

Politics can be brutal. And this was brutal for Crombie.

It leaves her jobless – at least from an elected point of view . It leaves her on the outside of anywhere politically.

So, what’s her next move? Retire from politics?

Not a chance, she said.

“I commit to you that I will stay on as leader of the Ontario Liberal party,” she vowed from the podium at the Mississauga Convention Centre after the votes were tallied Thursday night.

At least for now. The party will have a say of course.

It will be no easy task – both day-to-day and from a political point of view of not being able to face off against Premier Doug Ford in Question Period.

Sure others have done it. But it is conceivable Crombie could end up not being in the legislature for many years.

But when you look at the numbers, other than the very close loss of her riding by about 1,200 votes, there were many successes.

“The Liberal party is back to official party status,” said Crombie. “There is lots to be proud of.”

She has other options she could consider if her hopes of staying on are decided to be unrealistic. Perhaps run federally with the Liberals. She has, after all, sat in the House of Commons before.

Her late in the provincial election endorsement of Mark Carney to become Liberal leader and for at least a short time prime minister, certainty was well-timed for someone who might be in need of a landing spot.

But if that’s what she decides, she’s going to have to go back to the drawing board in terms of her support in Mississauga where she was elected three times as mayor.

It certainly isn’t a lock.

Okay, what about municipal elections next year?

Could she take another shot at returning and getting her old job back by taking on the person who took her spot that she vacated?

That might not be easy either. Carolyn Parrish is hitting her stride as mayor and many in Mississauga may send their own message that they can’t just be loved and left as Crombie chose to do.

But talking to insiders, and listening to her own sons address the party, her plan is to take the positive out of the evening and keep trying to lead this party from outside the legislature.

It may be a while for a byelection opportunity to get back in but with Ford having such a decisive win, there is nothing but time.

Now, if things had gone better for her, then there would be no Monday morning quarterbacking. But things did not work and the play to walk away from being in power of a major city to try to run the province turned out to be a hill too high to climb.

Of course, not all of this is Crombie’s fault. A lot of it was smart politics by Ford and his campaign team who saw the opportunity to go to the voters early and saw that gamble work while Crombie’s didn’t.

While she was talking in the campaign about important subjects like getting people family doctors and affordable places to live, Ford was focused on U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff talk.

Even though Crombie spoke of seeing the horror on the faces of seniors in the grocery store, no one was focused on that as much as they were the fear of what Trump could end up doing to not only Canada’s economy but our sovereignty.

It was a campaign killer for Crombie. But not for the party. They gained five seats from last time.

Few expected her to lose the riding she chose to run in Mississauga. Few except the many experienced Progressive Conservatives who worked on it. With a veteran of the political game Gualtieri being Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown’s mother-in-law, Crombie was up against some pretty deep competition.

The whole thing turned out to be a political skunking for Crombie and a not so perfect storm. It wasn’t all because voters rejected her. It was also a very difficult challenge – one that she was not ready to meet.

So, this is not an easy time to be Bonnie Crombie.

Her bold move to walk away from the security of being mayor of Mississauga has failed.

What’s next?

She’s going to try to lead this party – but do it from the sidelines.

The MPP who made Doug Ford eat his words
The ultra-rare non-party politician secured a landslide victory with 33,669 ballots for 63.7 percent of the vote

SIMCOE – Voters gave Haldimand-Norfolk independent MPP Bobbi Ann Brady a resounding endorsement in Thursday night’s provincial election as she easily won a second term and proved Premier Doug Ford wrong.

The ultra-rare non-party politician secured a landslide victory with 33,669 ballots for 63.7 percent of the vote, easily outpacing her closest rival, Norfolk County Mayor Amy Martin, the Tory candidate who despite a rising tide of support for Ford only mustered 12,949 votes.

“Here we are, ordinary people who have done the extraordinary,” Brady told supporters at her campaign headquarters at the former Eli’s Gun and Archery in Simcoe. “Not only have you done it once, you’ve now done it twice.

“Tonight, we celebrate a victory that isn’t just about a win, but the triumph of hope, unity, and the collective power of our great communities here in Haldimand-Norfolk. We know that when we come together with a shared purpose and a common vision there is nothing we cannot achieve.”

A Delhi-area mother of two, Brady called the night a “monumental victory” and said she was “deeply honoured” to represent the Southwestern Ontario riding at Queen’s Park a second time.

Brady spent two decades as an administrative assistant and campaign manager of longtime Tory MPP Toby Barrett but ran as an Independent in 2022 after then-Haldimand County Mayor Ken Hewitt was chosen by Ford to represent the Progressive Conservatives. It proved to be a major mistake by the Tories.

Despite not having major party backing, Brady’s numbers grew significantly from her inaugural campaign three years ago. The 2022 election saw her claim 15,921 ballots and 35 per cent of the vote, a victory she recalled political insiders saying was a fluke.

“I reminded them they were the same people who told us we’d never do it in the first place,” Brady said. “I stand before you with my heart brimming with so many things, most of all, gratitude.”

Ford – who won his third straight majority – and Brady have sparred publicly since, with the most notable instance coming in April 2024 while at Queen’s Park when the premier told Brady: “You won’t have a job next election.”

As a provincial and national kickboxing champion, Brady wasn’t about to back down. “I said in 2022 that courage would be contagious, and look at this room tonight,” Brady said.

Martin, who took a leave as Norfolk County mayor to run in the election, said she was proud of her campaign despite the loss.

“While we may not have won, we didn’t go down without a fight,” Martin said to a few dozen people gathered at Capitol 33 in Delhi.

After Thursday night’s election, the 124-seat Ontario legislature breaks down as follows: 80 Progressive Conservatives, 27 New Democrats, 14 Liberals, two Greens and one Independent – Brady.
