Hey guys.. quick question regarding the possible Telus takeover of Fido that somebody here may have insight on:

Since Fido operates on a GSM network, and Telus does not, would you expect Telus to expand the existing Fido GSM network, or just leave it as is to promote people to switch to their network? It seems like there would be a lot of people with GSM handsets left in the cold.

No one will be left out in the cold 8)

GSM is worldwide and will remain so. Telus will have world phones as well as PCS phones with the most coverage in North America. Soon phones in North America will be able to use both CDMA and GSM so you can use it just about anywhere. That is the goal :D

I have been with Telus since God knows when. It works very well anywhere I go. No problems with their customer support either.

Re: Best GSM Network in Greater Toronto Area

I have bought a Tri-band GSM Sony Ericsson Z600 unlock phone from overseas, and wanted to buy a SIM card from one of the cellular phone networks in Toronto. Which one (Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido) has the best GSM reception across GTA and neighbour 905 areas (like Markham, Richmond Hill)? I know Rogers is the biggest cellular phone network across Canada, but their GSM network is below average. Any insight? Thanks. Jan 23, 04

If you choose Fido I can guarantee you will save an additional $25 as soon as you join. I will only tell you in confidence if you email me: gabbo24@SoftHome.net

As a student Fido is a definite way to go.. Cheap... That's the word.. CHEAP! Telus on the other hand have crappy customer service just like Fido does... Rogers? They don't even bother answer your call...

Fido is great for city and urban areas just like everybodys says... Telus doesn't carry that much of Great phones... They're all crap... Unlike Fido using GSM can be unlocked from a certain provider... Bring a hot phone from UK or Asia (They sell mostly unlocked phones) you got a phone.. Just plug a SIM in you're good to go!

Telus on the other hand uses CDMA... ESN.. LOL they won't allow any foreign handsets,,, Even from bell... IT'S THEIR RULE NOT TO ALLOW ANY OTHER HANDSETS ASIDE FROM TELUS. Unless of course you know how to program your handset.. Even if you did they would question how you registered your phone...

Let's not get started with mobile technology... I can go on and on for days talking about this.... LOL

For me I would prefer FIDO over Telus... :D

Me too, cookies. I would use Fido over Telus just because Telus and Bell have ripped me off in the past with rates and plans.

But with Fido, I got ripped off too.. they eventually fixed it, though, after several hours of hell! They billed me incorrectly and it took forever to get fixed, and they threatened my credit rating in the whole process, even though they were in the wrong.

I think I might go with the new City Fido service in the future, but right now I'm staying away from Fido.

I wouldn't use anything other than GSM these days.. so I have a Rogers handset, and I'm probably gonna get away from Rogers soon,

Yeh... Haha...

It's a coincidence... I was ripped off pretty hard with Telus... They wouldn't fix it so I didn't want to waste any more of my time and went to my friend to hook me up with Fido... Although Fido did screw up on me, they were quick on responding to my problem so I am pretty much happy with them now... Lol

There are not really any good carriers to choose from eh?

I've got a Fido now :) The service is alright so far, again, but the reception with the z200 is not great compared to my old 3390 which I tested in the same room where the reception for my z200 sucks.

Next phone is definately going to be another Nokia :) Probably with Fido.

Today I got the new "Unlimited Incoming Calls" plan with Fido for $25/mo.

I will continue to use Telus and their amazing cool color flip phones for outgoing calls. With Telus I get unlimited text and calling between Telus customers for $20/mo

Finally, thanks to both Fido and Telus, I got rid of my home phone service and am finally 100% Mobile 8)

Hey.. I recently got a Z200 from Fido too and I find the reception is quite poor. I thought this had more to do with Fido than the phone since my friend's old phone using Rogers had excellent reception in the same room. But I have a 3390 from a long time ago. I guess I can dig that up and try using it instead. But I reaaaallly don't want to go back to that ugly thing. *sigh*

FIDO is almost useless outside of major urban centres. Good rates, or not, coverage and quality counts.

TELUS is better in that area, when comparing the two of them, but I use ROGERS and without complaint. Excellent coverage, good customer service (for wireless), and reasonable plans (not the lowest, but do you want coverage or cost?).

If you have to choose between Telus and Fido this is very simple. Make your decision by determining where you will use your cellphone most of the time. If you will use it in distant areas or travel a lot far from urban areas, then your first choice and only choice should be Telus Mobility. But if you plan to use it in major urban areas then don't even think about Telus, Fido is for you. Fido offers the best wireless services for peoples staying or traveling in major urban areas. Why? Simple: they have the lowest rates including monthly packages, lowest rates on long-distance calls, "billing by the second with all monthly packages", you can choose to have or not to have a contract. Without a contract, phones start at just $50 and they are much more valuable than any other Telus phones surrounding the hundreds $$$. Plus you should know about the sound quality. Fido and Telus could not be compared concerning call quality. Fido is also unbeatable on this matter. You just have to test the two Networks and you'll know what I mean...

Peoples saying that Fido has a "poor" network just don't know what they are saying. As I told above, Fido may be for you or may not. It all depens on your needs. Make your personal opinion on Fido by taking a look at their $25 unlimited incoming calls monthly package. They have a 15 day money-back guarantee so I think you should give it a try!

UPDATE :)

Bell digital signal operates on CDMA, the most extensive, covering the largest areas in Canada.
Bell has its own analog towers but not as many as Rogers.
Bell only offers per minute billing and high cost of additional air time, roaming and long distance charges. Buyers beware!

Rogers has two digital networks, TDMA and GSM, (GSM is the network used in most of the world for those who travel outside North America) GSM works great in urban areas as well, and TDMA has strong signals in buildings and elevators.
Rogers has the most extensive analog coverage in Canada.
Rogers only offers per minute billing and has additional charges similar to Bell.

Rogers is buying Fido and will continue to offer the Fido brand. Fido operates on the GSM network.
Fido customers will continue to enjoy per second billing, really good rate plans and will benefit greatly form gaining access to all the GSM towers combined (Fido and Rogers). Additional air time, roaming, and long distance are billed at very low rates :)

Last but not least, is Telus.
Telus digital operates on the CDMA network. Telus uses its own towers as well as all Bell CDMA towers, giving Telus clients the largest digital coverage in Canada.
All Telus handsets use CDMA. Really old Telus handsets used Rogers analog towers when the digital signal was absent. Since 2000 all Telus handsets use all analog towers when needed, but with their extensive digital coverage, it is rarely needed.
Telus has more rate plans to chose from than any other carrier. They offer match-it plans so they can match plans from other carriers. Telus has the lowest cost plans and can offer per second billing, matching Fido's low cost additional air time, roaming, and long distance rates.

Telus also offers the "MIKE" brand digital network that has a very powerful signal that works very well in buildings and elevators.

Summary for best coverage and rate plans:

Fido if you need a world phone.
Telus if you only use the phone in North America.
