Best GSM Network in Greater Toronto Area

I have bought a Tri-band GSM Sony Ericsson Z600 unlock phone from overseas, and wanted to buy a SIM card from one of the cellular phone networks in Toronto. Which one (Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido) has the best GSM reception across GTA and neighbour 905 areas (like Markham, Richmond Hill)? I know Rogers is the biggest cellular phone network across Canada, but their GSM network is below average. Any insight? Thanks. Jan 23, 04

Only Fido and Rogers have GSM networks. Fido coverage is lousy outside of metropolitan areas and Rogers will gouge you on the price. I have a GSM phone but will be buying a CDMA phone since I can't stomach the high bills from Rogers.

The myTelus Forums(mybc, telus discussion) Boards are now closed permanently. The Sympatico Forums are in limbo until fall 2004.
Regroup here to continue the communities we together participated in for many years. You can also visit http://etches.net/talk/ for
current boards!

We regret the lose of the Telus discusison groups and forums. Many of the posters have already regrouped and we hope all the others can be found eventually. If you are part of the mybc forum or sympatico forums then please post here or go to the address listed above.

These boards were geographically located in Canada with participants from Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and other areas of Canada and the US as well. They covered a wide selection of topics including Internatinal News, Community issues, Entertainment and Spirituality.

So if you ask me which is better I would say the company that did not leave a large community in the learch with no notice or assistance in regrouping.

What service will they disable next? Yours most likely.

What's the truth? The truth is it's just a rumour and that even if Telus were to buy Fido, you would not lose your service or your telephone number.. It would just be taken over by another company. Just like how former clearNET customers saw no change when Telus bought them out.

I hope this clears up any questions.

I'm thinking about signing on with Rogers. The two options I'm considering:

- Nokia 3560 (TDMA technology)
- Nokia 3595 (GSM)

I'll be in Toronto for the next 6-12 months, maybe longer. I would use the phone mainly in the GTA, with some use up north and out-of-province.

Any thoughts--on Rogers or choice of cell phones?

I can't advise anyone to sign a contract. Although Rogers has good coverage cross-country, I will never sign a contract with anybody.

You have two weeks to try out both Rogers and Fido without obligations. So try them both one at a time to see if it works in your areas you frequent most often.

Telus will let you keep you Fido plan and phone number if they buy Fido. I still have my Clearnet per second billing plan

My family has Telus, Rogers, Bell, and Fido.

I like Fido, but must give Telus my number five star rating :D . Here is why:

My roommate and I are infatuated with mobile phones and technology so we share and test all networks in many ways to determine the best overall. These tests included finding out if there were any bugs or hidden charges such as for voice mail retrieval while out of your local calling area.

#1 All Bell companies and divisions rip you off whenever they can and have the worst customer care I have ever dealt with, especially if you are trying to get a credit or cancel your service.

#2 Rogers is OK but clarity is very poor and drops calls. They will give you credits where they are due, as long as you explain the problem clearly and persistently.

#3 Fido has per second billing and really good plans but poor coverage outside metropolitan areas.

 Now for the winner, Telus, where the future is friendly, still my number one mobile phone provider:

- Telus has the most amazing handsets to chose from. My favorite is the LG 4600 loaded with features I love and need such as options for daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly reminders in the calendar events that you can assign different reminder ringers to any scheduled event, or any of the 4 separate alarms, three of which can be set for Daily, Mon-Fri, Weekends or once.

- Telus has amazing clarity and great coverage. No other Canadian wireless company has greater digital wireless coverage, which extends from Vancouver Island to St. John’s, Newfoundland, offering all-digital service to more than 90% of the Canadian population.

- Telus has the best "Future is Friendly" attitude of all. I have always got what I wanted and I am still on per second billing. If you call client care and get someone new who can't help you, just say "thank-you for your time" and try again latter. Some of the more experienced reps know little tricks to give you more than they really should. Telus wants your business and will go the extra mile for you.

- Telus will match most popular plans of other providers and have the biggest selection of plans I have ever seen. Choice is good.

- mytelusmobility.com has so many options for you to work on you own account and check out ringers and pictures that allows you to send to your phone after previewing. Telus has more Wireless Web and download partners, providing thousands of sites, ring tones and images that let you do more with your phone. There is some small fees for downloading to your phone of course, as would be expected.

- Telus uses primarily CDMA for the PCS that operates on a national 1X network, the latest generation in wireless technology.

- In both 2002 and 2003 rankings by the National Post, TELUS Mobility was rated the #1 wireless company in Canada.

- Last but not least, Telus might be buying Fido. The fido subscribers will continue to enjoy all the Fido benefits for as long as they want. Just as I have continued to enjoy all the benefits of Clearnet, I am still on per second billing as I was with Clearnet since 1997.

Fido is launching a City Fido plan. Look into it, you won`t be disappointed! (CityFido.ca)

By comparison, Fido surpasses Rogers in all respects including quality, cost-wise and coverage.

Hope that helps!

you are a real phoney!! get it? PHONE-y...you`re probably too obtuse to get it...anyway, you probably work for Telus and are trying to get clients. ...pathetic...why not speak the truth? Telus is a vicious enterprise full of empty promises and evil trickery...if you must know the truth folks, Fido is the best all-round deal....i`m talking price-wise, quality-wise and coverage-wise where it matters the most, metropolitaine areas.

telus will not touch fido....if you change to telus they will eventually bill you per minute ....stick with fido like me, don`t give in to malicious and bullying practices like Telus is doing right now

I loved Clearnet; I love and appreciate Fido; I also love Telus.

As I already stated in my last post, Telus allowed me to stay on per second billing since I was on it with Clearnet. I think Telus will do the same with Fido clients.

I hope Fido stays as is, but if anyone does buy Fido, I prefer Telus. From personal experience, I can tell you that Telus will not take away per second billing fom any current plan, with or without a contract.

I loved clearNET also. Excellent service, just excellent. I dont have very much experience with telus, but AFAIK, Telus' management stayed the same when it renamed from clearNET to Telus.

You remember those bulky Sony phones they had? I still love those phones for some reason - coolest phone I ever had and it's ancient now.

If you choose Fido I can guarantee you will save an additional $25 as soon as you join. I will only tell you in confidence if you email me: gabbo_24@yahoo.com

The coverage of Fido isn't the best. The reason for this is because they are the pioneers of GSM (Global System for Mobile) in Canada. Rogers has recently tapped into this.

The service with fido in the areas that it covers best is probably the best clarity and enhanced features you can get. Although, as I said, Rogers has come into the GSM market and I'm not sure how the service of Rogers and Fido GSM compares.

Only main problem i've had with Fido is that it does not work in Wasaga beach.

If you choose Fido I can guarantee you will save an additional $25 as soon as you join. I will only tell you in confidence if you email me: gabbo24@SoftHome.net

:D There are people still using that Sony... amazing.

I also have one but it cannot hold a charge anymore :(

I have quite the collection... and may open a mobile phone museum some day
