Family pet mauls 16-day-old B.C. baby

A 16-day-old B.C. baby girl was hospitalized Sunday after being mauled by the family's pet dog.
Police in Saanich in southern Vancouver Island say the infant suffered non life-threatening injuries, the Saanich News reports.
"In the early morning hours of Dec. 28, information was received that a 16 day old baby girl had been mauled by the family dog," Saanich police Const. Lisa Bruschetta said in a statement.
"The child is in hospital with non life threatening injuries. Due to the significance of this file, the family agreed to have the dog euthanized."
According to the Saanich News, Bruschetta said charges are being considered.
The Times Colonist newspaper reported the dog was a pitbull and Rottweiler cross and had been the family's pet for 17 years.

Doesn't really matter what breed or size the dog is. It's a common risk any dog owner will face when having a baby. Dogs get defensive and can consider the baby a threat to it's position with its owners just as if they got another dog, cat or whatever.

Introduction of the newborn and your dog needs to be a slow, gradual and extremely careful process regardless of how well trained your dog is.

yeah, and the dog didn't need to be put down. just adopted to somewhere that has no toddlers/babies.

people can be real stupid when it comes to trusting their so-called 'trusted pet' alone with their infant/toddler.
