From the time of original settlement to 1821 they were under Spain (talking about Northern New Mexico here) and then under Mexico to 1848 at which time the area was taken be the US. Then (as another poster pointed out) there was no need to learn English because the English language was irrelevent. English speakers in NM for years had to learn Spanish.

You betcha...they speak the language they need to speak to communicate with who they need to...

Why learn a different language if the people you communicate with already know the one you speak?

Anglophones can be such arrogant pricks sometimes...

Hey, hey! The person who first pointed out that English was irrelevant (moi!) has English as a mother tongue. Lay off the stereotyping of the anglophones! ;)

RE: ENGLISH CREATED AND P

WOW this thread seems to have a lot of "action" in it.

Who cares what language who speaks anyways? It always amazed me how the US is so resistant to new things. Sure English is the main language of the world, but that does not mean other languages should not be able to be used. The US should become a bit more tolerant and become Billingual and have Spanish as the other official language.

From what I seen with Katrina, french is spoken often in Louisiana. Really whats the big deal? You should be able to find someone who speaks english to help you whether you are at a store or dealing with government.

I have long come to realize neocons/ far right conservatives hate change and are scared of change.

I wonder why the US does not use the Metric system either? Its the measurement of the world. But again, scared of change. Hell it would probabley save exporters money.

The Federal US Govt does not have any law that says English is the "Official" Language, it just happens to be the lengua franca spoken by the majority. In Louisiana, English, French and Spanish are languages that may be used in the court system or on legal documents so long as an English translation is also provided, likewise an English Legal document here may be translated for the convienence of a party into French or Spanish!

Common Law provides that English is the common language but all govt docs are also provided in Spanish when the need arises, Even income tax forms!

Some of the older Folks here in Louisiana speak only French and that can cause problems especially with emergency news broadcasts, medical issues, business dealings, etc. Our news here is repeated in French and Montreal TV is carried on our cable system!. Pourquoi, Pa-Pa, Paul Martin n'est-il pas le président en Louisiane.?

Metric is the only legal system recognized by the Government with an official scale set English to Metric. Sales in Metric are legal in the US but the common system of using English Measurement is entrenched. Most meat markets use both with metric in small print, but metric is strange enough, our only legally defined by International standard, measurement system.

There are tapes you can buy! Or enroll at St. Anne Universite au Pointe-le-eglise, N.S. for your French Immersion Class, or try Universite de Louisiane au Lafayette!

Its not hard to learn French, just need to graduate from the cereal boxes to Canadian Tire Instructions.
