Failing to teach evolution by natural selection in science lessons could lead to new free schools losing their funding under government changes.

So far 79 free schools have opened in England with 118 more due to open in 2013 and beyond. They are funded directly by central government but unlike other state-funded schools are run by groups of parents, teachers, charities and religious groups and do not have to abide by the national curriculum.

The new rules mean if a free school is found to be acting in breach of its funding agreement - for example, teaching creationism as a scientific fact or not teaching evolution - the Department for Education will take "swift action which could result in the termination of that funding agreement.

I'm not aware it's ever been funded in the first place. Even separate schools have to teach evolution if I'm not mistaken.

You dont get government funding if youre not teaching government curriculum as far as i know.

You are correct, but it begs the question: Do families that home school (and adhere to the curriculum) receive any form of funding or tax credits?[/QUOTE
Being a provincial issue that may vary among the provinces. The only two families I know here most certainly do not teach their kids evolution. Both are religious fanatics and one took their kids out of a church school because it was too liberal for them.

My girlfriend's kids are in the separate school system and they do a big unit on Darwin & evolution even though it is a catholic school.

Wow! Sound like real peaches.

Perfect, ... there goes the tax-free status of all the Churches (and other 'non-profit groups) (no spot on tax returns for political donations either.)

Indeed, most people home schooling their kids are doing it for religious reasons. Not sure if all are fanatics though.

By not teaching evolution or teaching creationism as a scientific fact these parents and schools are only hurting their kids and in the long term the country itself. If a bunch of young people grow up scientifically illiterate or believing fairy tales to be literally true they're going to have a hard time getting a decent job.

Home-schooled students receive funding in most jurisdictions in most if not all provinces. For example, parents who home school in Calgary are entitled to $812 per child through the Calgary Board of Education provided they submit receipts for student materials purchased. Parents are instructed to adhere to the provincial curriculum, wink, wink.
Honestly, parents teaching flat earth, creationism, moon as green cheese, and so on, should forfeit all subsidies. These parents place their children at risk intellectually and socially. Blatant right-wingery and ignorance.

I.... believing fairy tales to be literally true ....
With a supposed lack of desire to gather material things for themselves an accountant would seem like an ideal location for them in society that is geared to collecting as much material things as you possibly can by any means

Evolution is not against Catholic doctorine. As a matter of fact a Catholic priest/scientist was one of the original authors of the big bang theory.
