Not all of them. We founded plantations where no other Europeans had been before.

An Englishman called Penn founded Pennsylvania.

And if anyone did the tsealing of land, it was the Americans themselves. I'm still waiting for America to give Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California back to Mexico.

Senior Blackleaf, the Mexican Ambassador to the US.

The part about plantations reminds me of the frenchmen in "Apocolypes Now", ranting about his rubber plants "they would be noting witout us." :D

No offense, BL.

That's what they were called. Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia (named after Queen Elizabeth I, the "Virgin Queen") were Britain's plantations.

RE: England, NOT the moth

Blackleaf, I actually really like Texians, they have respect enough to place not 1, not 2, but 3 George cross flags inside the alamo to pay respect to the 3 englishmen who died fighting for the texan nation, and they are proper sized ones, right as you go inside.

anywhere else would interchangably use the union flag to represent england..I liked that touch....my full respect goes to them...nice people too

My favorite event I have ever seen in British Royal tradition is the Military Tattoo....

Does anyone remember when Hong Kong was turned over by the British to the Chinese?

The military exhibition of men and horses was absolutely splendid and had me in tears it was so beautiful.

I don't know how often it is performed but the men and their horses must train a great deal to arrive at such perfection.

I think the British are better at performing these pageants and ceremonies than any other nation in the world.

Just look at the Queen Mother's State Funeral in 2002 - the uniforms that all the different types of people wear.

Or the Trooping of the Colour, which happens every year, and attracts all the tourists. There should be one soon for the Queen's birthday.

Oh, bother, I read that last line wrong, Blackleaf. I thought you said there would be one soon for the Queens funeral.

Well, Daz_Hockey, politically Britain is the mother country because for one thing we copied their parliamentary system which works quite well for us. But for instance, when we travel we are confused with Americans, not the English. Culturally we are now Americans with the qualifier North.

That England or Britain is the "mother" country to Canada is a feeling held by a minority I believe. Has there been a poll on this lately?

RE: England, NOT the moth

thats not surprising dumpthemonarchy, simply because, to your credit, canada has had a great deal of immigration over the last 40 years......but you forget your past at your peril.

everyone knows canadians are continuously mistaken for americans, and we know the reasons....hell, when I'm in north america I'm often referred to as australian, simply accents.

quick diagram for you:

Great Britain
I
British American Colonies

/ \
CANADA USA

Right.....as you can see from the diagram above, the USA is your BROTHER country on the British Colonial tree, NOT YOUR MOTHER...often a problem in some southern states of the USA.....Please do I have to draw another diagram?...fact is, it isnt the new immigrants who set up the country

But daz_Hockey, England was first, then the USA, then Canada. Canada has a unique relationship with every country on Earth.

England/Britain-the mother country, the US-we call them cousins. This kind of terminology excludes the rest of the world and is dated. Why is our brother/mother(s) countries forcing us Cdns to use passports to enter them?

RE: England, NOT the moth

same reason I need a passport to enter both countries, which ok, is a lot less than many other countries need, simple fact is this: upper canada and lower canada (quebec) already exsisted before the revolutionary war (or as some call it in the uk, the second civil war).

You have a relationship with a great many countries, as do we, but the bonds are slightly different, same with the USA, but, to their credit, the US has never forgotten where it came from.

My father's family are Franklin's, legend has it his ancestors moved back to old blighty after a disagreement with his father (presumably the father and son trouble with Ben Franklin), now he moved up to upper canada, but he considered himself "British" not american, so basically you can see why I'm carrying this argument on, but to say your mother country is the US would effectivly deny the whole of canada's history, and effectivly wipe my ancestor's off the map.

nope, the early canadians considered themselves VERY british, sad tale really, he never really did feel at home in Reading, where the young Franklin ended up, and he never spoke to his father again.

But he never ever considered himself American

No, Americans have not forgotten where they came from, hence the lack of animosity towards the British. We have many things today we owe the British, as far as I'm concerned, all we did is have a little spat a couple of hundred years ago. How about some tea and krumpets to bury the hatchet? :D

As for this passport thing I don't understand what the big issue is. The EU for example has a unified customs and border security (if you want to call it that). Once someone enters the EU they can move freely about without the need of a passport. Canada and the US do not have that system in place, where as it may be an inconvenience, we are still different countries.

RE: England, NOT the moth

very true, and I wholeheartedly concur....but crumpets really do taste nice you know!....a bit of butter on them and it sinks like the titanic opps....nah your right, you are differing countries, which as I say, my opinion about canadians saying

"General Brock was great n'all, he died fighting for canada and that, but he wasnt canadian so he should be thought of as a foreigner and we dont have our own hero's"

that kinda statement makes me come to the same conclusion as the americans I've spoken to "but you were all english then?".....see I do like americans honest :)

but I think the passport-less EU thing is basically someone saying "hell, we've hd enough people crossing our borders for wars, passports be gone!!!".....it does make you laugh at borders like niagara US/niagara CAN, I had to wait on a train for 4 hours!!!! while 2 sets of gaurds stormed each train (personally I thought the US border patrol were much funnier....what with their guns and gung-ho attitude to arabic-looking people), so yes, I agree even thought they may seem similar, canada and the US are actually further, politically than a lot of EU countries

Uh, by that logic, you all should be worshipping France instead of dissing her with the Freedom Fries et al crap since without her, you'd all still be sipping tea and eating crumpets daily.
