Easily misunderstood part of the Bible (Luke 14:25-26)

I am informed, with considerable heat, by a friend who has a Ph.D. in the field, that there is no "Old English." She assures me (pretty much at gunpoint) that it is Anglo-Saxon (Beowulf), followed by Middle English (Chaucer), followed by Modern English (Blackleaf), with Shakespeare right on the transition from Middle to Modern.
Funny the things folk get all worked up over.
The answer is simple - while the words are rendered as "hate" they should be rendered as "love less":

Agree, Mikko. Unless we regard our original inheritance in Adam as rubbish and discard it, we cannot lay hold of the our new inheritance in Christ.
You forget only Adam was created sinless. He was created from dust. But all his descendent were sinners. God did not create Jesus from dust so he too would be sinless. God created Jesus by fornicating with a sinner Mary. She might have been a virgin. But like all those after Adam, she was a sinner too. Mary should have been stoned for adultery because she begat children from Joseph while she was still married to god the father of her first born son Jesus.
Jesus died because he claimed to be the messiah and the Jews were disappointed. The Jews have seen god send Moses, David, Samson to deliver them in the past. Jesus was no messiah to them.
If Jesus was with sin as he was the product of fornication (god/Mary) and Mary was both a sinner as all descendants of Adam are as well as an adulterer for the reasons I gave. Then Jesus could not be sinless and therefore could not be the sacrificial lamb for our sins.
So, do you hate your parents?

You have to meet God before that difference is there and get the emotional peace of mind that goes with it.

It's being human that prevents you from being good enough for the kingdom of heaven...that and the fact that it doesn't exist.

I have to say anyone that can get into Chaucer has my complete and utter and profound respect. I took one course ONLY Canterbury Tales, omg, it was freaking hard. I had to actually work on it.
It is so far out of my league that whatever conclusion your friend has arrived at, I'm good with.
