Dozens of people in Taiwan have changed their names to "salmon" to take advantage of a restaurant's sushi promotion deal.

Officials have issued a plea asking people to stop visiting government offices to request the name change, according to local media.

The restaurant offered an all-you-can-eat sushi meal to anyone with the name Gui Yu or "salmon" on their ID card.

Unimpressed officials said the rush was wasting government time.

The offer began on Tuesday when sushi restaurant chain Akindo Sushiro said anyone with the Chinese characters in their name could get free food for themselves and five friends.

It led to dozens of people requesting a name change, the Taipei Times reported, adding that applicants pay around £2 (NT$80) for a new ID card and a registration certificate.

According to the newspaper, one student in Taichung said she had changed her name to "Kuo Salmon Rice Bowl" but planned to change it back the next day.

Other salmon-themed names included "Salmon Prince," "Meteor Salmon King" and "Salmon Fried Rice", according to AFP news agency.

Two others managed to eat around £329 (NT$13,000) of sushi in one go and posted online: "I do not think we will want to eat salmon again for a while."

But Deputy Interior Minister Chen Tsung-yen said that the name-changing was wasting time and creating unnecessary paperwork.

"I hope everyone can be more rational about it," he added.

Officials also issued a reminder that names can only be changed legally three times.

I wonder if Alex Salmond is eligible for the prize.

It's funny how lots of people in the West think sushi is raw fish when it's actually rice.

MAN CHANGES NAME TO ‘SALMON DREAM,’ NOW HE’S STUCK WITH IT

One will do anything for free meal — including change their names.

A Taiwanese man did just that in order to win an all-you-can-eat sushi meal for himself and five friends as part of a two-day promotion on March 17 by Japanese restaurant Sushiro.

According to United Daily News, any customer whose ID card contained the word “Gui Yu” — Chinese for salmon — was entitled to the sushi feast. Looking for a free meal, a student from Taichung university legally changed his name to Zhang Salmon Dream.

Unfortunately, he has maxed out his name change quota, so he’s now stuck with that name. UDN reported upon getting his newly changed identification card, Zhang was told he had previously changed his name three times and wasn’t able to amend it anymore.

Zhang, who is majoring in traditional Chinese medicine, said he was shocked as the realization that his Salmon Dreams moniker is now stuck with him.

In a post on Facebook, lawyer Lin Zhi Qun stated the student may be able to legally change his name back as long as he fulfills the condition outlined in Taiwan’s Name Act, which states a name can be changed if an applicant has the same given name as an elder relative.

In Zhang’s case, he would have to ask his father. However, Zhang said he changed his name behind his parents’ back and hadn’t let them know about it yet out of shame.

"Zhang" means "archer". It's the third most common surname in China, corresponding to the English surname Archer. So he's called "Archer Salmon Dream."
