Northern Ontario,
When you learn something the hard way??????

One good thing about it is that you never forget.....

My knowledge about technology and computers has been trial and error....lots of errors:lol:

A week ago I buy a couple of security wifi cameras to monitor the house when I'm away especially in the winter time....
Since they are DLink DCS_930L, a good match for my Dlink router......set-up is a breeze and everything works fine from the house network and with the 3G on my Phone.
A couple of days later I get an offer from my DSL provider "Northerntel" more bandwidth 8 Megs instead of 5 and the option to change my cell service with them instead of Telus for a total savings of $20 a month.

The DSL modem comes in the mail yesterday, and it's a Sagemcom modem/router combination, making my dlink router obsolete... and set up with all of the 3 computers and Ipods, Iphones in the house is a breeze, until my wife says that her "Pogo" game web site is slower than dial/up .....After running a few Tests, This web site is running ok but Broadcom speed test is slower than molasses in January...So I call Norterntel tech support if they are having problem reports for my area.....He has me do a number of tests and agrees that the problem is not at my end and but a work order for Tuesday since it's a long weekend.
BTW I pointedly asked him if the local server had flushed it's DNS cache, and he answered in the negative, and I believed him.

I go out for coffee and decide to access my cameras remotely on 3G....no go and they worked on the home network......No Go!!
Spent 3hrs last night and 2hrs this morning trying different set-ups and still no cameras on 3G..
So I decide to give up and wait for Tuesday and get a pro to give me a hand....
At Tim Horton this afternoon I decide to give the remote access a try and by gawd it worked....

I'll never trust those call centers again......

I want to install exterior cameras so they need to be cabled for heat otherwise around -10 they just do not work.
Had issues with vandalism over the years.

People and their CCTV cams and whatever else they're called are comical. Some install them to be able to identify nasty people but they install them so high that anyone wearing a baseball cap would be anonymous. I think eye-level would be the height I would install them at. And they'd be built into walls or whatever to minimize vandalism (that little knot in the wood ain't a knot).

Those dlink Cameras are a solid state, and cold weather shouldn't affect them......After initial set-up, they don't need to be hard wired to your PC....although they need a low power supply.
If you look up the specs, you can set up motion detection on them and also a message sent to your phone, should it detect anything, although you have to play around with the internal software in order to do it, and if you make a mistake somewhere along the way, you can do a hard reset and start from scratch.....
I did it 8 or more times last night and this morning when I was imagining I was doing something wrong......"Which I wasn't" It was a server error somewhere between the dlink server and my house.......
Photo included

The time delay between the camera to the dlink server and back to my house is 2 seconds.....

Good Idea.........I might just decide to try it as an experiment.....

This outdoor remote thermometer might be just the thing to camouflage it This pic I just took.......

One thing about them cameras is that some will run with certain ports open on your router which could give you a security problem....
A firmware update for the camera fixed that.....
Even if you don't have a camera it's a good thing to sometimes run an outside scan of your system for "holes" in your security....
Gibson Research at https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 does a great job
I got a full stealth report.......even while viewing with my IPhone on 3G
Port 80 and 443 are the ones commonly used for cameras.......
