Before any of the G7 leaders ever set foot in Sicily, it was clear that this was Donald Trump's summit and everyone else was just living in it.
The stories to accommodate the predictably unpredictable U.S. president filled the global media as the idyllic town of Taormina braced for Trump's first full international summit.
G7 leaders agree on counter-terrorism, but clash with Trump on climate, trade
G7 leaders agree to fight protectionism, but U.S. delays decision on climate agreement
But for those organizing this summit, it had already become increasingly clear this would be a difficult G7 when nobody could find America's Sherpa.
Sherpa is the nickname given to each senior bureaucrat who represents each leader in the negotiations that precede the summit and continue after the leaders arrive.
Trump initially appointed Kenneth Juster as his Sherpa. But in the run-up to the G7, Juster was given new duties and never replaced. So the Sherpas of the world's most economically powerful democracies arrived in Sicily not knowing who would speak for the U.S. president at their table.
