Border authorities shut down Akwesasne crossing

So they shut down the crossing in Cornhole, er, Cornwall today because the natives are ticked about the border guards carrying guns.

The Mohawks say that the guards typically don't respect them and they are worried they may become victims of gun violence at the hands of the border guards.

Is anyone here intimate with the situation?

I'll settle for opinions on the topic, hell, I'd even like to hear what y'all think of the new regulations.

Speaking for myself, I love a little anarchy. Whenever a group stirs the pot, I get a little excited.

The Mohawks do not have a point. They should respect the laws of the country like everyone else.

I wouldn't say intimate, but I know a thing or two...

Under the Jay Treaty we cross the border pretty much unhindered. But we are still subject to checks by both US and Canadian border Guards. The present issue is silly. I for one have no issue with the Border Guards carrying weapons, so long as they have received proper training, of which I believe they have. There has been issues in the past between Natives and the Guards, but it hasn't always been the fault of the border Guards. Again, this present situation is silly. Much ado about nothing.

Border Guards should be armed, it's not like are borders are getting any safer.

I agree, to a point.

Totally agree. What if a terrorists gets into the country and blows up their tobacco factories......

Im curious, is Akwesasne a reserve? And i thought the native s had final says on a reserve?
Actually, not under MIA standards, they have yet to incorporate. Thus they are still considered a sovereign territory.

Yes it is, and it straddles the Canadian/u.s. border
Kinda...;-)

What's the big deal about selling smokes off the rez, anyway? Can they take them off, but not sell them? Can anyone buy them on the reserve, but not take them off?

(On an unrelated note, I was watching Intervention one night and the featured drunk was a Southern Ontarian (takes one to know one). Along side his empty beer bottles on the coffee table was a bag of whites. )

There's no duty tax applied to them yet. Which is why they're so much cheaper.

Can they take them off, but not sell them?
Yep, as long as you live on the Rez, you can purchase goods and services tax exempt. That includes smokes. You can leave the Rez with all your purchases, but you are not allowed to resell them.

Can anyone buy them on the reserve, but not take them off?
You can buy them on the Rez and take them off, that's what has the Province and theh Fed's all bent out of shape. Though non Natives aren't supposed to be able to buy smokes tax exempt, many shops just don't check or care. It's big business, on them thar Reservations.

, The other day I offered to get them cheap for Yukon Jack, he didn't reply, lol...

As soon as my buddy comes back from upstate NY, I'll be able to get my hands on all the name brands cheap, lol. He's in for a nickle for trying to cross the border with a tractor trailer full of illegal smokes. His paper work was clean for the smokes, but the plates on the trailer came back stolen, lol.

Thanks, for the info CDNB

There's so many people selling those smokes it's almost farcical. Yakity bags of cigarettes - I prefer brown, the white ones smell like ass.

I read about this earlier this morning, and I don't really know enough
about this situation to comment. What I did read leads me to believe
that I'm only reading about a portion of the story...and it doesn't add
up to the information given. It's hard to comment fairly with only 1/2
the facts.

Source: Time to get tough with Mohawks: Expert

Native leaders and activists at Akwesasne have been warning for months
they would take action to prevent Canada from giving nine-mm pistols to
its border agents, because they say the presence of armed government
agents on their reserve is an affront to their aboriginal sovereignty.

But people at Akwesasne have for years tolerated armed U.S. border
agents on their territory.

"The American customs post has been heavily armed for years," says
Thompson. "The American post is right in the middle of the (reservation),
and they all wear sidearms. What's more, you go into the office, and there's
a rack of automatic rifles sitting there behind the front counter."

See what I'm saying about only getting 1/2 a story. It doesn't make sense.

Are you talking about the white ones with the little gold stripe around the top of the filter, if so, yes, ass would be a good descriptive. When I smoked, I smoked Podiums or Players lights, depending on what I could get for cheapest price. Neither the brown filter, nor the whites impress me much, lol. Some of them are actually made at Akwesasne. To many twigs and not the greatest tobacco in the world, lol.

Native leaders and activists at Akwesasne
Key words. Both are professional groups, only one is somewhat good at their job, the other experts.
But people at Akwesasne have for years tolerated armed U.S. border
agents on their territory.
Of course they have. This is one of those moments I get embarrassed to be...:-|

Much ado about nothing...;-)

Yes, white with the gold stripe. Right from the bottom of the barrel. I used to get a carton once in a while from a friend who is from the reserve up around Golden Lake. I don;t buy the bags very often anymore, the tobacco usually falls out the ends before I finish the carton anyhow.

At one time, everyone and their dog seemed to be selling Export A medium, then the prices were reduced - was that under Harris?

My ex-husband used to deliver liquor for the LCBO, so that was never a problem............

So maybe we can introduce tariffs on their cigarettes? Or are the Mohawks signatories to the North American Free Trade Agreement?

;)

Around my cottage area, anyone can get them, natives or not. And they get resold all the time as well.

They said on the CBC news that the fed. govt loses over $1 billion per year due to lost cigarette taxes from these border reserves. A little hard to believe but true. It also fosters crime and the fed. govt still dithers. Go figure.

Aboriginal reservations have limited sovereignty. They're not even on maps or any atlas I've ever seen. Their sovereignty is limited to and within the parameters of Canadian and US laws. Beyond that, I'm not sure. No third country recognizes this sovereignty as far as I know.

I have never heard of an aboriginal from a reserve traveling to Europe or anywhere else without a passport. The passport states to 150 countries and about 6 billion people on the planet that you are a Canadian. This is a clear example of acceptance of Cdn laws. Aboriginals are sort of Cdns, a bit of a legal historical puzzle.
