If you’ve been on Twitter lately, you’ve probably noticed people with brackets around their name.

There’s a reason for this – and it’s not immediately obvious.
People are adding the brackets – known as ‘echoes’ – to their names as part of an online anti-racist movement.
Why brackets?
For a while, white nationalists, neo-Nazis and anti-Semites – groups largely now part of the disturbing ‘alt-right’ movement – have been putting three sets of brackets around Jewish people’s surnames on Twitter.
The brackets worked like a dog whistle – other neo-Nazi followers would see it, and send that person a barrage of anti-Semitic abuse. It essentially put a virtual target on Jewish people’s heads.
