Distracted by devices, dozens of drivers net $490 tickets

In just two hours, officers with Ottawa’s traffic unit netted more than three dozen drivers distracted by their devices.

A total of 39 people were ticketed for using cellphones behind the wheel in the area of Bank and Isabella streets between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday.

“Many more were seen, but officers were too busy with offenders to stop them,” police noted.

The drivers were so engrossed in their phones that they didn’t even notice the five officers out conducting the blitz.

“We were in full uniform, stood beside the road in full view of drivers, and we were still getting violators,” said Sgt. Robert Cairns of the traffic unit. “This proves what a distraction the cellphone is.”

Police noted that distracted driving costs motorists $490 and three points on their licence.

Good! I see those assholes yacking away on their phones while driving on a daily basis. The next one who kills somebody while phoning and driving should be locked away for a long, long time to send the message.

Fines aren’t stiff enough, should be treated like impaired take the vehicle and criminal record. The government needs to wake the hell up.

Bottom line is those Assholes don't care who they injure or kill.............nothing is more important than their banal conversation generally about f**k all! Fines should be $4000 with a 3 year driving suspension!

Did you know in the USA for a truck driver it's $1,500 USD but for the company if they new of the driver common use of a cell phone while driving $15,000 USD.

I have witnessed Truckers texting and driving while running down the road.. 80,000 lbs and texting.. it's absolutely crazy, and right here in Alberta.

I think you guy’s are making it a much bigger deal then what it really is.
The 490$ is already way more severe then it needs to be.

Somebody should write an app that triangulates chatter locations.

Breathalyzer for smartphones. Honks the horn if it picks up certain words. A spelling app that worked off you spelling the message out would make for error free spelling and complex enough that long messages would be avoided and the spelling would prevent you trying to edit by using the screen.

People drive like arseholes nowadays..."I'm important and I'm in a hurry!!!"

Same at the Tim Horton line-ups. You have to wait 2 minutes and the feet start stomping and the eyes start rolling at the cashier.

Technology has sped up our brains to the point where many have become discourteous jackasses to everyone around them.

I noticed that too. I’ve even told some of them on a few occasions to fuking relax because they are getting on my nerves

The employees have been thankful too, the times I’ve done this

I filled out a Tim Horton's survey card once and wrote..."The spaghetti was a little cold"

They don't sell spaghetti, but thought I'd give the manager a chuckle just the same. ;)

Another time at the Hospital...

I had to give a sperm sample. So you go into this room and watch porn videos. After i was done, I had to fill out a form and at the bottom it had a comments section. So I wrote...

"The sub plot in the second porn movie was rather weak."

I got some strange looks and smiles from the Nurses when i returned on my next visit! ;)

I've been doing nutty stuff like that my whole life. In grade 8 I put a big letter "F" on the door that said "Art Room, so it became...

"Fart Room" lol!

The Principal came on the announcements the next day demanding to know who the culprit was who defaced the school property!

My friend is more into the funny stuff trying to flirt with the nurses, like you did with the porn joke.

He was telling me somethin very interesting before he got very lost. His REM sleep was messed up. It sometimes lasted much longer then normal. A few seconds of REM sleep can mean what feels like 10 minutes of dream time.

Sometimes he would wake up from a dream of living a full life time.

Its no fuking wonder he lost his mind

At the Hospital, there was a Peanut Allergy sign on the 4th floor which read, "No Nuts Allowed"...

In my psychotic state, I felt someone had placed that sign to make fun of me...that I was a nut and not welcome on the premises.

They say comedy is 'Tragedy plus Time". Certainly is in my case! :)

Guess it depends on what value you put on a human life. I'm actually wondering how you can say that when it's obvious for all to see that $490 isn't changing the behaviour! :)
