If it has ever been on the internet, it will always be on the internet. That is just a fact of life in the digital age. So with that simple truth in mind, it’s probably not a good idea to do something in public that you’re not going to be proud of, because your actions will be out there forever — no matter how hard you try to erase the evidence.

Take the fine folks at the Alabama Democratic Party, for example. Somewhere along the way, somebody at the Alabama Democratic Party thought it was a good idea to hitch their wagon to an anti-christian misogynist HBO talk show host in an effort to advance their party in one of the most God-fearing, pro-family states in the country.

And suddenly the liberal cadre at the Alabama Democratic Party realized what the rest of us have known for quite some time now — Alabamians don’t share their values (or taste in “comedians”).
They started frantically scrubbing their website of any reference to Bill Maher. The url (Alabama Democrats) which had served as the landing page for ticket sales to their “Evening with Bill Maher” began redirecting people back to their homepage. It was as if they had never implored folks to “Come join Alabama Democrats at the Von Braun Center Concert Hall in Huntsville for an Evening with Bill Maher.”

This brilliant plan to shelter themselves from the impending fallout worked perfectly…except for that pesky truism we mentioned earlier about what happens once something’s on the internet.

Yes, Maher is an avowed socialist/left-winger, which means by default, in the US he is lumped with the Democrats, although he is often critical of the party for their divisiveness and generally "being pussies" (letting the GOP push them around). And yes he did pitch in $1 million to Obama's re-election campaign, but that doesn't tie him to regional branches of the Democratic party or them to him, any more than they both find mutually beneficial: its not like he is using his influence to push an agenda that benefits him, at the expense of society.

No, he is not part of the party's hierarchy or structure, although as a public figure, they probably don't object to any influence he has being used in their favour: everyone loves free publicity/buzz. Some Dems are bound to love him, some are bound to hate him, mostly based on his style, which is sarcastic, somewhat in-your-face and apologetically profane, all of which plays well to late evening adult audiences.

I know social conservatives have it in for Maher because he is an overt atheist and uses every chance to mock the hypocrisy that "religious" politicians bring to the fore, but although I am not fond of spiritual militants of any stripe (pro- or anti- religion), I agree with a lot of his stances on the issue because it mostly boils down to "I don't care what you believe, just don't force me to believe what you do, and especially not through governmental offices". Even given his atheism, I think he has a better appreciation of Christian philosophy than most many self-professed Christians do.

There's a big difference between just saying you're a comedian and going out and getting thousands of people to laugh hard for 90 minutes. And the one I'm compared to most is Carlin, who also had these kind of problems. Edgy is my brand - everyone wants that, but they say, "but never go over the line." It's like telling Tom Brady, 'Throw into coverage 40 times a game every game but never throw an interception.'

I think the bolded parts summarize my view of the whole religious right vs Maher debate. Maher is a comedian and satirist, Limbaugh is a political commentator. Dennis Miller can do the same thing if he wants and I'll laugh at his lines too (I used to love Miller, I just never see him anymore).
