Deigo Garcia military base unaffected by tsunamis

The key United States military base in the Indian Ocean has been unaffected by the tsunamis which have devastated parts of Asia, The Washington Post has reported.

Diego Garcia, a British territory about 1,500 kilometres south of India, hosts about 3,200 US military personnel and civilian contractors and many US long-range bombers and Navy ships.

Lieutenant Colonel Bill Bigelow, a spokesman for US Pacific Command in Hawaii told the newspaper the US base was apparently safe.

"There are no reports of any damage there," Lt Col Bigelow said.

Absolutely! George has been discussing this natural disaster with God. They decided together to smite as many muslims as possible with the earthquake and tsunami for the terrorist attacks around the world.

Much like when God opened the Red sea for Moses and the Israelis, he calmed the ocean waters around Diego Garcia. George asked God for this intervention.

You comments here about this topic is not very appreciated. How can you be so happy about the death of almost 100,000 people some of them Muslims and the rest are Christians and Hindus. Your comment about George and the death of as many Muslims is sickening.

The article I post it has nothing to do with religion. It is a political statement meaning your bases are well fortified even against natural disasters.

moghrabi, I think they are being satirical. It does seem ironic that with all that damage, the tidal waves just go harmlessly around Diego Garcia. I wonder how the rest of the British Indian Ocean islands made out. I also wonder if the US Navy lied about damage, although I see no reason for them to. Except, there is this persistant rumour about a Guantanamo-like torture camp there. http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2004/10/301490.shtml

Thanks Mooseskin.

Is it time to be satirical about a situation like this? How would people feel if this happened in the US and if we post something similar to that they call us Anti-American.

It is also amazing that with all the damage that was caused, their base of torture is still standing.

And we still believe that 9/11 was caused by foreigners. Huh.

And you my dear mog, are an idiot. I was not expressing happiness at anyone's death. I was being sarcastic in response to your political statement.

It was clear what your reason for the post was and since you frequently post ridiculous suppositions, I naturally carried it to conclusion.

Diego Garcia’s escape from the tsunami has nothing to do with it being well fortified against natural disasters. East of Diego Garcia is the Chagos Trench. It is one of the deepest trenches in the Indian Ocean. The depth of the trench and grade to the shore of the island atoll does not allow for tsunamis to build.

The one who is being sarcastic at the death of thousands is the real idiot. You onve said that you don't mind having a dictator for a president. Can you be more idiotic than this. Also you are a moron for electing one.

This morning, all flags in the US are ordered to fly at half mast in mourning for the victims of the Tsunami. $350 Million in aid has been pledged so far and the full resources of the US Military have been offerred to the countries hit. The US Navy has ordered all medical ships to the area as well as logistical support. (THIS INCLUDES ALL SUPPLIES AT DIEGO GARCIA!)

Former Presidents Clinton and Bush, Sr. have been tapped to spearhead the relief effort and private fundraising in the US. President George W. Bush tapped two of his predecessors to spearhead the United States aid effort for victims of last week's tsunamis. The president enlisted his father, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton to lead private fundraising efforts to supplement the contribution of the federal government, which now stands at $350 million for humanitarian relief

Secretary of State Colin Powell briefed reporters on Monday en route to Bangkok, Thailand for a meeting with foreign leaders regarding the devastation resulting from the Indian Ocean tsunamis which have so far claimed over 140,000 lives.

The 109th U.S. Congress will convene in Washington, DC on Tuesday with disaster relief for the tsunami victims at the top of their agenda.

When tragedy hits, there are no Liberals or Conservatives, no nationalities, only people wanting to help.

The island isn't fortified at all. Diego Garcia is just a very remote island in the indian ocean and has an airstrip and various other military facilities.

Look it up on Google.

Thank you. I totally understand the help the US is offering in this horrible situation. My reply was for one American who was making fun that Bush talked to God to kill as many Muslims as possible.

Is this the right time to be sarcastic about something so horrible. Suppose we were sarcastic about 9/11 on the week it happened. What would Paco think?

RE: Deigo Garcia military

Just to get away from the little pissing match that's forming up here for a second or two...a couple of things.

1. As many people have died from the AIDS pandemic in the last two weeks as were killed in the tsunami. Same with the two weeks before that. And before that. And that many will die in the next two weeks too. Nobody is tossing money and physical aid at that little problem this way.

To say there are no Republicans or Liberals or national interests is certainly not correct in that context.

2. Political competition, a gang of little boys with their pants undone passing a ruler around, has upped the ante as far as donations are concerned. It's the closest thing we have to an international system in situations like this.

It makes me incredibly happy when Washington gives more because then Ottawa gives more and then England tosses in a few more quid and Tokyo finds a bundle of cash that was just laying around anyway and then Washington gives some more and Paul Martin digs into his pocket....

You want to satirize something? There it is. Every country does it. Even India is in on the act...offering aid to Thailand. If it wasn't for that ruler being passed around nobody would have given dick...pardon the pun.
