RE: Cowboy Hat Prices Soa

Do you do a lot of work outside in the rain, James? Do you even go to the state fair if it's raining? Urban cowboys. They wanna be John Wayne, but they aren't even as tough as John Travolta.

One has to wonder about a society which can get concerned over the price of COWBOY HATS....as it does not reflect much depth .

Amazing how much power such items of image have over some. Remove the Cowboy hat, the huge buckle. the boots and of course the worshipped gun..........and what does one have??? A group of superficial /shallow people who have been brought up on movies/games and believe that life is like that. Who is impersonating what ???

Maybe the population should re-evaluate its value system. and change their motto from American DREAM.........to American REALITY............get a lot more grounded.....

Suspect that most of these urban cowboys wearing these hats and strutt around macho like........would not know the front end of a horse from the back.. -------let alone spent some time on a real ranch doing real ranch work.......( which is far from glamorous)

Well the necons might consider a alternative to fur, something more suitable for da image...a shark skin stenson. Pass the kleenex around for the cry babies, bring out the violins.

I mean what better eh? shark skin stensons, for when they circle their inept leader for the kill. Ouch! guess they gotta find another cowboy to lead the charge up the hill, fantasy hill that is. All stagger, no swagger... shallow cardboard cowboys...tsk tsk...

Of course not Rev. Why would I do my yard work in the rain? That's silly. No, I don't attend the state fair if it's raining. Who does? The point is, my hat does a good job of keeping the sun away while at the fair. However, a little vitamin D is good for the health.

A hat made of straw or a piece of string is better in the sun because it allows for air flow.

You're onto the sun thing now, I see. Odd, because your previous argument was that you needed a felt hat to keep the rain off. Of course there are several styles of hats available in waterproof fabrics.

This is one topic I should probably run screaming from, but since it's raining, there are realtors whining about showing my condo and I'm generally in a cranky mood, I shall dive in. Leather clad feet first.

I wear fur. Real fur. Dead animals. I have two fur coats. One "good" one that I wear out for fancy and one "every day" one that I sometimes even cuddle up under to read when I'm cold and miserable. I love my fur coats and make no apologies for them.

I struggled with the morality for years before finally giving in to my life long desire to own fur. My earliest recollections of loving fur coats are when I was about 2 years old, sitting in church, patting the coat of the woman sitting next to me saying "boo-ey, boo-ey" and my mother telling me to quit it.

Animals did die so I could revel in the luxury of my fur coats. By the price I paid, I'm sure someone didn't collect up road kill or natural death animals. It's kinda sad. It's less sad, though, than thinking about the animals used to create milk, cheese and eggs. Those animals live a horrible existance. Remember, the by-product of milk is calves. I've worked on a dairy farm and seen the treatment of these little creatures.

Ever been to an egg-laying plant? Or a slaughterhouse? If not, Google it sometime and tell me that my fur coats are more cruel. At least the animals that died for my cause lived a happy, free life before they died.

I was vegetarian for nearly a decade because there is a part of me that truly believes eating meat is wrong ... unless I'm willing to go out, kill a beast myself and prepare it for the table. The sanitized version we get at the supermarket allows us to be all self righteous about things like wearing fur while we dine on our burgers and steaks and eat the eggs produced by chickens living in detestible conditions.

I spent years working on my friend's ranch. Cowboy hats, boots and chaps were not a fashion statement. Being out in the rain and sun, riding through thick brush to round up an errant cow, sitting in a saddle (leather, btw) for 8 to 12 hours one needs all the proper gear. I loved my cowboy gear! I still have my boots. That I felt like Annie Oakly out there in my duds doesn't take away from the practical need to wear certain clothes.

I also owned a Harley. Ya, I admit the tassels on my leathers were for show, but the leather coat, chaps and boots were necessary equipment. If you've ever seen road rash from someone who had a small oops while riding a motorcycle, you understand the wisdom of the equipment.

So, basically, I am forced to offer some sympathy for those who wear cowboy hats and have to pay an increased price for them. But not too much sympathy ... I think the higher the price, the less disposable these items become and the fewer animals required to fill the demand. I think those of us who choose to wear animal products should pay for the privilege. Especially cowboy hats, since they can be made from felt or leather and be just as attractive and functional. ;)

It's kind of odd...people on the coast don't dress up like pirates, after all.

How would you know? you're in winnepeg, and I can tell from the type of posts you make, that you've never looked at the world beyond your front yard.

Peppy ... don't be a dork. Obviously you don't read Rev's stuff very carefully. You have every right to disagree with his politics, but shitcan the personal attacks. It only demonstrates small mindedness on your part.

Having said the above as a fellow forum member, I also have a comment for you as a moderator:

8O Are you not Canadian?

Don’t you know that this country was opened by young European men chasing fame and fortune in the age-old quest for beaver?

Because it was the fashion, since 1550, for European men to appear in public with a beaver perched upon the top of his head, all the European beaver supplies had nearly dried up.

But Christopher Columbus encountered a barrier between Spain and China, John Cabot discovered the village, Canada, and ultimately a new supply of beavers were opened.

All that remained was to export the beaver back to Europe, where hatters courted a semblance of madness trying to fashion them into something a man could balance of his head.

When a fad threatens to endanger both the environment and the craftsmen making it, naturally, it will become institutionalised as a social necessity.

Thus, when John B. Stetson, while travelling out west in 1865, created and wore a hat made of fur as a joke, its success was a forgone conclusion

....quite one sided here aren't we Cosmo? A lot of the left wing nuts here like Peapod ,Rev, and Fucci use personal attack on people here and its is accepted(probably because of the partisan factor and the way the forum leans)....plus I don't see how peppys point was a personal attack..just an observation...

As a forum member: Don't take me on over this, Hank. You'll lose. People come here with the explicit purpose of attacking certain people, Rev being one of them. Am I a little protective? Yep. As a fellow forum member, I hate that crap. It disrupts the threads and divides the board. I'll do whatever I can to deflect it.

Biased? Sure. This is a left leaning board. You know that. If you express militant right wing views here, they are going to be challenged. Shoot, look at my post earlier in this thread. I'm expecting some backlash from that! You go after a regular member here and you'll get slapped down. And this wasn't even your fight. It was between Peppy and I.

As a regular forum member here, Hank, I don't much like you. I find your politics just plain wrong, your religious view offensive, your philosophy suspect and your personal statements annoying. Turning me straight depending on how I look? Yi. It is I that should be doing the eye-roll icon. If you don't like what I say, tough. Ignore my posts.

As a moderator: Rev's answer was restrained and reasonable and I wanted to step in before things got ugly. Things have been pretty peaceful around here for a while and I'd like that to continue. I have been a moderator through some very nasty fights here and have no desire to go through it again if it can be avoided. I will not discuss this any further with you. If you have issue with how I moderate, the process is to PM Andem.
