I sometimes wonder if there isn't some fundamental flaw in the human psyche that no amount of "punishment" or "consequence" can influence. Until and if we ever find that answer, we are stuck with the alternative. As gruesomely terrible as the rape of any person can be, providing the opportunity to escape responsibility through mudering the victim isn't a step on the pathway to resolving this kind of atrocity.
