I've already stated that it isn't perfect, but it's the best we've got at this point
(even just the knowledge that someone might just end up on video due to
their actions, and thus they govern their behavior accordingly). Can you
suggest something better at this point in exchange for surrendering this
liberty? (by choice or otherwise)

Tens of thousands of CCTV cameras, yet 80% of crime unsolved - News - Evening Standard

Is this the solution you seek?

Tell me that you'd still have the same perceived liberty in an environment like that?

CCTV & ATM cams & Dash cams & video cameras in pulblic are a fact
of life at this point. They aren't perfect, but it's the best we have at this
point.

CC cams, dash cams, ATM/bank cams are one thing.... They record events from start to finish and are essentially objective as they are passive tools.

That said, what I was driving at related to the notion of foregoing your liberty for security.... Wouldn't it appear that having your every move recorded (without your permission) represent an erosion of your freedoms?

Lemme ask you.... If it was a 250 lb female officer, would you get behind the cops on this, or would the protestor lady still get a pass?

It would still be excessive force. A much larger person beating on a smaller person. The fact that it was a man beating on a woman makes it all the more reprehensible.

Far too much conjecture going on. Facts are she sprayed silly string and could be charged under a couple of laws Nimflir listed. The officer used excessive force to subdue her and got caught on camera. So charge her with mischief thing and charge him with assault. Let them both have a day in court with all the evidence available and live with the verdicts. That is how it works. She don't get a free pass because he punched her in the mouth, he don't get a free pass because he is a cop.

I have to agree. I'm not a fan of the big brother state. That is why me turning on my cell camera when a cop approaches me is so important. If he does his job properly he has absolutely nothing to worry about.

You're assuming that the cop know it was silly string?

How about a toy gun? Plastic knife?... They're just toys after all

Yes, because I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Otherwise, the police officer is a lunatic that punches people in the face when he gets confused as to what is going on.

You didn't really think about what you read, did you? The laws she could be charged under are stretched interpretations of laws for charging people that are standing nearby and barking. In fact, that is a more clear cut case of disorderly conduct: if she was barking at the police officer. Do we consider it justice to punch people in the face or lock them in a cage for making unnecessary noise?

The charge was dropped because it makes a mockery of justice to charge someone with spraying silly string.

Hmmm, she assaults officers, refuses to obey lawful orders, attempts to flee, gets taken down, and the Cop is the bad guy?

Interesting.

LOL. You really should take some time to gather a few facts before you jump to defense of stupid, dumb or just plain ignorant cops.

Here....found the water coming in:

Some person back in the crowd wearing a long sleeved garment, and
not the woman in the crosswalk who was punched in the face who
was wearing a T-shirt. Does this change anything though?

Cute Kids Laughing At Water Pistol - Jokeroo.mp4 - YouTube

That cop should go and beat the **** out of this parent. Multiple assaults....of children no less!!!

You're a police officer coming face to face with someone who is holding what looks like a pistol.....do you ask yourself is it a real gun? or a toy gun? or do you react with the assumption that it is deadly?

Is it a can of silly string in that hand or is it acid or some other concoction???

Maybe we should start registering silly string so if the cops come to my house they can check the database and find out if I'm packing.

I have two or three water pistols. I'm going to hide them in the attic tonight just in case.

The sadly un-funny part of that is people have been shot by cops for pointing a water pistol!...or cell phone (not sure how it looks like a gun but..)...or a wallet. I wouldn't be surprised if one day some trigger happy, **** scared kid fresh from the academy caps someone for pointing their finger.

OK smart guy...You tell me in one second which is the real gun in those three....because that is the time you have to live if you're a cop and someone pulls it on you

Now explain this Einstein....if a police officer & peace officer are the same thing why do cops swear 2 different oaths? 1 to the queen to act as a peace officer and a 2nd oath to the corporation of Canada to be a police officer. Once you get that you might understand where the difference lies. To help you a bit....Judges swear 2 oaths as well...1 to the queen & 1 to the corporation of Canada.
Irrelevant, You said they weren't Peace Officers, they are.

Enjoy.

Wow, talk about Stockholm syndrome.
Nope.

Birds of a feather stick together.
Nope.

It definitely was not assault.
Assault is any contact, without consent.

He wasn't doing his job. He was beating on someone weaker than he is.
No he gave a smack down to someone he thought was a suspect, who appeared to be fleeing.

LOL. You really should take some time to gather a few facts before you jump to defense of stupid, dumb or just plain ignorant cops.
Couldn't agree more. That's why I never argue with them...I just make fun of them.
Is it that time of the year again already?

Welcome back Jimmy.

There goes the neighbourhood.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree Bear, as IMNSHO the officer was not in the right here at all.
