Runaway kangaroo on Wisconsin highway cuffed by cops

KENOSHA, Wis. — It was a brief taste of freedom for Joey the kangaroo who kicked his way out of a pen at a southeast Wisconsin pumpkin farm, only to be rounded up by sheriff’s deputies.
The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department received a call around 7 a.m. Thursday from someone who reported seeing an animal on Highway L in Somers, and that it looked kind of like a kangaroo.
Deputies were dispatched. And sure enough, there was Joey hopping down the highway, making his getaway. Deputies figured the kangaroo belonged to Jerry Smith’s pumpkin farm just blocks away. Sheriff’s officials say Joey was returned safely without injury.

Funeral held for off-duty Peel cop killed in crash

Constable Tristan Kettles would have turned 26 on Friday. Sean William Nelson Seeber just turned 27 on July 28.
It’s just too young to die.
Sadly there was no party for Tristan on his birthday. Instead, family and friends gathered at a Mississauga funeral home to pay their respects and mourn their loss together.
The popular Peel Regional Police bagpiper and a pal were killed in an early morning car crash on Lakeshore Rd. W., inside his own policing division, on Sept. 9.
A funeral Service will be held Saturday at the Portico Community Church, 1814 Barbertown Rd. in Mississauga, followed by a reception at Wyldewood Golf Club in Oakville. Memorial donations will go to the Wounded Warrior’s Fund.
Tristan is survived by his dad Jim, a much loved Staff-Sergeant with Peel Regional Police, his mom Stephanie, his sister Tiffany and his long-term love Arielle.
If I could turn back the clock and change anything this week it would to reverse what happened to these two young men in Mississauga.
Dropping over to visit Peel Regional Police’s 11 Division Wednesday just about every copper felt the same.
But you can’t turn back time.
“It’s been a healing exercise,” Tristan’s dad said. “It has not been easy. He was a good police officer, an old soul and a good kid.”
Jim Kettles also urged people to remember that another family has also been shattered by the deadly crash.
“Please don’t forget his good friend was also killed in this as well. He was a very good kid as well and our hearts go out to his family. It’s devastating.”
He was talking about Sean Seeber.
Information sent over to me by a friend said the only child is survived by his parents, Scott and Tara Seeber, and his girlfriend Amanda Tanti, “with whom he was so deeply in love.”
Our hearts go out to them.
An online notice of passing said as a “passenger” in a single car crash “Sean was struck down in the best years of his life.” It described him as “an honours graduate of the Humber College Police Foundation Program” who was “actively pursuing his dream to be a police officer with the Halton Regional Police Service.”
The notice also said “consistent with his wish to improve the lives of others, Sean was employed as a mental health assistant at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.”
He is described as being “incredibly vibrant, ambitious and compassionate young man, with a hunger for life.”
It’s not fair. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
Toronto Police are investigating the crash, which also resulted in injuries to a third man.
“Tough times,” said a young constable inside 11 Division, whose eyes welled up with tears. “They were both very good guys.”
Everybody there said the same.
“Energizer Bunny,” one sergeant said of Kettles. “He never stopped working and trying to help people. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree. He was just like his dad. Almost like a carbon copy. A terrific person and police officer together.”
Many said the same thing about Seeber.
“Tristan would likely have ended up as chief and Sean would have made an incredible police officer too,” said one cop who knew them both. “It’s terrible how this turned out.”
I’d like to change it for them but, like all tragedies, there’s not a darn thing we can do about it other than grieve and say rest in peace.

The mayor here actually had to lecture the cops on at least occasion - they should have been using the in town Tim Hortons (by contract they are supposed to be in town while on duty, unless on duty that requires leaving the boundries of town) instead out being an outside of town Tim Hortons, which would cut their response time significantly, during a police emergency situation.

Wayward cow brings New Jersey traffic to standstill

STOCKTON, N.J. — A New Jersey state trooper on his way to work had to tell a cow to mooove it.
Sgt. 1st Class Jeff Flynn was driving to headquarters Thursday morning when he came across a traffic jam on Route 29 in Stockton, a rural town northwest of Trenton. He drove along the shoulder and came upon a wayward cow that was slowing down traffic.
The cow gave the trooper a look and continued to meander along the highway.
Flynn says the cow’s farmer arrived and with the help of another trooper, they managed to get the cow back to its farm on the other side of the highway.
Flynn says it’s not the first time he’s had to deal with livestock. He’s also had to corral horses and goats.

Florida cops seek suspect after pit bull puppy Ollie beaten, stabbed and stuffed in suitcase to die

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Police in Florida want to know who stuffed a beaten and stabbed pit bull puppy in a suitcase and left him to die.
Hollywood police spokeswoman Miranda Grossman tells news outlets that officers traced the puppy’s cries Tuesday to a blue suitcase that was left behind an abandoned building. Inside, they found the bloody dog with deep cuts on his head and body.
Grossman says they took the dog, now named Ollie, to an animal hospital.
She says Ollie is about a year old and will be neutered and micro-chipped as soon as medically possible.
Meantime, she urges anyone with information about what happened to Ollie to contact investigators.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A pit bull puppy that was beaten, stabbed and stuffed into a suitcase in Florida has died.
The Hollywood Police Department said Friday on Twitter that the puppy recently named Ollie died at an animal hospital Thursday night from multiple severe injuries. Hospital administrators say Ollie’s story prompted an outpouring of support and emotion from across South Florida.
The puppy was found Tuesday after officers traced its cries to a blue suitcase that was left behind an abandoned building. Inside, they found the bloody dog with deep cuts on his head and body.
Investigators are asking anyone who might have information about the abused puppy to contact Hollywood police.

'Absolute genuine kindness': RCMP officer replaces girls' tricycles after theft

BLACKS HARBOUR, N.B. — A New Brunswick Mountie is being praised for an act of kindness towards two young girls heartbroken by the theft of their tricycles.
The Curtis family of Blacks Harbour, a small seaside village west of Saint John, noticed their daughters’ two tricycles missing from their driveway last week.
The tricycles belonged to Sawyer, 2, and her sister Ramsey, 4, who immediately became concerned about her missing trike.
“I thought, ’Gee, that’s really heartless,” said Kristi Curtis, mother of the two girls. “It’s kind of mind-blowing.”
Curtis put a sign on the family’s window informing neighbours of the theft and then decided to file a police report.
RCMP Const. Anthony Leighton arrived at the family home on Friday to take their statements and ended up befriending the young family.
“I went out and I met this beautiful family,” he said. “It broke my heart to know these two little girls had to go through this situation.”
After speaking with his wife, Leighton decided to purchase two new trikes for the girls.
“This is not something I needed to do, this is something I wanted to do,” he said. “I joined the RCMP (because) I love people, I love our communities. I like to see good in this world. I believe that one good contribution to our community will lead to another.”
Leighton made the surprise delivery to the young girls on Saturday, prompting shrieks of joy and high fives.
“My daughter Ramsey, she just started spinning around the yard. My other daughter, she’s so shy and she just kind of stood there and said, ’Mine? Is it mine?”’ she said.
“Him coming with two new bikes to surprise them, it just blew us away. It was just absolute genuine kindness. We’ve never had anything like that done for us.”

Leighton said his “heart was warm” after giving the children their new trikes and he’s even thinking of the thieves who took the original ones.
“I may never know the situation or understand why someone would have stolen those two little girls’ bikes,” he said. “Maybe they have children. Maybe someone needed bikes.”
The officer’s chivalrous gesture was shared on social media, and he began receiving messages of praise from across the province. He said he hopes the story will inspire others to pay it forward.
“We have such a great country. We have such great communities and we have such a great police force and members in it,” he said. “We are fortunate in this country to have such good people. This is the Canadian way.”
The girls rode their new tricycles at the playground all weekend and have been bringing them in at night for safekeeping — and also so they can ride them in the living room, Curtis said.

HALIFAX — Police say they believe a wayward pig has made it home after roaming around Dartmouth, N.S.
Halifax Regional Police tweeted on Saturday that the force is ending its search for the owners of a black-and-white pig that was spotted roaming around Dartmouth’s north end.
“We believe he went wee wee wee all the way home,” the force tweeted on Saturday.
The force put out a call on Twitter on Friday asking pig owners to contact police if their pet was missing, adding the hashtag “#ucantmakethisstuffup.”
Some social media users were skeptical about the post’s sincerity, but the official HRP Twitter account assured that while they like to “ham it up,” they were indeed searched the area for the portly animal, but to no avail.
“(S)urprisingly this little piggy must have gone to a track meet – because we couldn’t catch him,” police tweeted.
Police tweeted on Saturday that after receiving no reports of a missing pig, they were left to conclude that the runaway had wandered its way back home.

A little doe rescued from Hwy. 401 could be called a reindeer because of the damp light snow falling.
On Friday, the deer managed to find itself on the busy highway near Avenue Rd. and was bewildered as to how to get off the road.
Ontario Provincial Police officers managed to safely corral the deer between a cruiser and a barrier wall.
The happy holiday moment wasn’t lost on OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.
“Hey @santa are you missing a reindeer? We helped this one off #Hwy401 in Toronto,” he tweeted.
“You can pick him up at Downsview Animal Control now. He has a small cut but will be fine. Hurry up #Christmas is just around the corner and (it) wants to pull your sleigh.”

Police drove the deer to the Toronto Wildlife Centre in the back of a cruiser.
The TWC said the sedated the deer, stitched her wounds and released her a few hours later.

LOS ANGELES — It was a race against the cluck as California Highway Patrol officers scrambled to rescue nearly 20 chickens that ran through highway lanes near Los Angeles.
The agency says the birds blocked a portion of Interstate 605 in the Norwalk area Tuesday morning after their cage fell from the back of a truck.
The agency tweeted photos and video of the chickens on the highway and a motorcycle officer collecting them.
Officers managed to rescue 17 birds. Two died.
One tweet asked: “why DID the chickens cross the road? Because they obviously did not want to become ‘fast food’ on an LA area freeway, of course!”
The driver transporting the chickens was unaware that the birds fell off the truck and did not stop.

WEST COVINA, Calif. — It was less an arrest than a roundup.
Police say a donkey led more than a dozen sheep and goats on a stroll through a suburban West Covina neighbourhood east of Los Angeles.
Police were called around 12:30 a.m. Thursday by reports of a herd of animals walking the streets.
The animals were finally corralled with the help of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities say the animals escaped their owners’ property in neighbouring Valinda through an unsecured gate.
The owner was contacted and took the herd back home.
No injuries were reported but police say it raised a few eyebrows among officers who thought they’d seen it all.

HUDSON, Fla. — A Florida deputy was caught on video politely pursuing a four-legged suspect on a busy road.
Pasco County Sheriff’s Cpl. Art Madden on Wednesday spotted a chestnut-and-white horse galloping in and out of traffic on a road north of Tampa. Rolling down his law enforcement vehicle’s window, he asked the animal to “please stop.” He also made kissy noises, to no avail.
According to authorities, he was able to herd the animal into a nearby housing development, and the mare finally came to a stop. Madden exited his cruiser and approached, only to have her run off again.
The horse eventually stopped a second time, and that’s when Madden threw his arms around her neck.
The horse’s owner, who had reported the animal missing, arrived and took it away unharmed.

CAPE MAY, N.J. — A dog is home after police in a New Jersey shore town posted its mugshot on social media.
Cape May Patrolman Michael LeSage found Bean the pug in a yard on Sunday. He tells The Star-Ledger of Newark he tried to get the dog to hop into his police car, but her legs were too short so he had to lift her.
Police posted a photo of Bean on Facebook with the caption: “This is what happens when you run away from home.” It took a few hours before Bean’s owners tracked her down.
Hadley Hubbard of Baltimore, Maryland, thanked police and posted that Bean was sound asleep after an exciting run.
LeSage posted that Bean paid her bail in cookies.

Dog lured off busy highway with pink teddy bear

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A dog could not resist being lured away from a busy Massachusetts highway by a teddy bear.
The Massachusetts State Police got multiple calls of a dog dashing through traffic on Interstate 291 in Springfield on Sunday morning.
MassLive.com reports Trooper Corey Brown responded and saw a Doberman pinscher running down a lane. Brown grabbed a stuffed pink teddy bear from his cruiser. The dog loved it and grabbed it quickly, following commands to sit. The dog has been returned, unharmed, to the owner, who lives near the highway.
In May, a trooper in Worcester pulled a similar move by luring a dog off the highway with homemade deer jerky.
