I've done a lot of work in structural over the years, what building codes would be thinking of?

Improvements in energy efficiency. That could be through the National Building Code of Canada, or acceleration of the Model National Energy Code for Buildings and Model National Energy Code for Houses. Apparently Ontario already has one of the best building codes in North America with respect to energy efficiency. As a plus, these kinds of changes drive innovation from manufacturers.

I looked into solar panels, even with the financial initiatives, I couldn't afford it.
Well, if something like this became a policy, we could expect the same or similar gains to those made in Germany through economies of scale, as the tech becomes more mainstream. Could you have afforded a system if the cost were 50% of the quote you received? Used to be that only the rich could afford a car. The times, they are a changin'. There are definitely benefits to not being the first into the pool

Oh don't get me started on Ontario building codes, lol!!!

The permits we needed to replace an outside wall, roof joists, the inspections, it was crazy. I can understand the necessity though.

I hear ya, I have no intentions of righting off the idea. The house gets an incredible amount of sun. It would be a great addition to the work we've done and plan on doing.

So I won't get you started on building codes :D

One day I'll build a house, and maybe instead of paying utilities I'll get a cheque every month instead. That's some time down the road though!

Yeah, took about 22 years for us to start getting money back from our energy input into the system. But we haven't exactly been applying maximum effort. "All work and no play... " as it were.

There was atime when that was worth the effort here, but I was reading how Ontario Hydro dropped the rate they would pay, because it was eating into their bottom line.

I'll see if I can't find an article on that.

But that is part of the problem, it goes for water as well. I have to have water and sewers now. I wanted to stay on the well and the septic. Neither of which presented an issue.

But we were forced off it.

I remember your description of the ole homestead. Similar to what I had in mind.
