GAA All-Ireland Final

Clare 3-29 - Cork 1-34

Clare win by a point

Croke Park, Dublin
Attendance: 82,300

Ireland's biggest sporting event of each year took place yesterday as the counties of Clare and Cork took on each other in Irish hurling's equivalent of the FA Cup Final or the Super Bowl.

Hurling is the Republic of Ireland's biggest sport and over 81,000 packed into Croke Park in Dublin to watch as the country's biggest county County Cork took on County Clare.

Clare won by just a point to win their first All-Ireland championship since 2013 and their fifth in total.

The match was also shown live next door in Britain on the BBC.

She did what? With who?

Ohhhh Claaaare.

Yeah. I was a bit confused as I sat there yesterday afternoon watching the match. I had no idea what was going on and how the scoring system works but as I watched I gradually figured it out (see if you can figure it out).

Hurling is one of three sports administered by the GAA in the Republic of Ireland which has its origins in the ancient Gaelic past. One of them is Gaelic Football, which is closely related to hurling.

I discovered the match live on BBC Two yesterday afternoon. I've never known a GAA match to be shown live in Britain before. Seems like the Irish are trying to spread their sport to their big neighbours next door.

By the way, the old guy in the bottom right of the photo is the Irish President Michael D Higgins.
