No, in fact they are not at all all transparent. They are secret. You have people being jailed without trial and people being tried without being able to see the evidence against them. You have library books being tracked, and the librarians are not allowed to warn people which books. You have expanded surveillance, all secret and without the need for a warrant, being done through wire taps, listening in on cell phone calls, monitoring internet sites, and reading people's e-mail. You've limited the right of people to speak out against their government and tried to intimidate those that insist on speaking out anyway. You've put people on no-fly lists, often erroneously and sometimes ridiculously, but won't tell them why they are on the list.
You know those illegals comin over the Mexican border? Your government hasn't got a frigging clue who they are. They don't fly in, they walk or ride in the back of a truck. Your surveillance does you no good whatsoever.
You don't have satellites that can find bin Laden. You don't have the intelligence to find bin Laden. You have the ability to find bin Laden. Here's a hint...he's someplace with power and lights and access to communications. He was never really in charge anyway, he's just a glorified paymaster. There never was an intricate network, just a loose group of people who were fed up with what the US was doing in the Middle East. He can communicate at will and he can get money where it is needed, which is all he ever did.
If I were you, I'd be looking in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Not out in the desert or up in the mountains, either. Look in a modern city where the phones always work, the internet is reliable, and dialysis machines can be plugged into the wall.
