So if we get rid of horse racing, what will happen to the horses? Do you think people will keep them for fun? More likely straight to the dog food plant.

Also, drivers die in car racing too. I guess they should be banned as well. Heck people die almost daily driving to and from work, lets also ban driving.

Ah, so your point is that it is the horses who voluntarily sign up for the races.

I'd be interested to see the registration forms, what do the signatures look like?

Does this surprise you?

Your opinion only, about it being senseless.

Perhaps they could change the name of the event from the Calgary Stampede to
"The Calgary Farm Animal Killing tournament"

Not that I support getting rid of horse racing, but yes. Thousands of people keep horses for fun.

And they will continue to. The racers are not those people (my hunch).

They are not human. They don't have to give consent.

The races themselves are not inhumane. There is some risk of death to the rider and the horse. Using the figure provided of 2 horse deaths / year, that means chance would be (2 / (number of riders per race * number of races per year)) * 100 %. I think you probably have a greater chance of a car accident.

And I didn't say they were.

With an average of 2 deaths per year, you're pretty much guaranteed to see a horse die, or suffer an injury bad enough to need to be put down. That sounds like a great time, mayhem and grievous bodily injury, pretty much guaranteed.

And yet, people can't understand where the calls to end it come from.

Still, it's fun to watch people and animals get hurt. It's good entertainment.

HEy heres a thought for the do gooders. If you don't like horse racing go back to your video games and leave the rest of us alone.

Sitting playing a video game vs sitting watching an animal tied to a wagon run around.

Are you trying to suggest there's a difference? Oh, right, there is: the person playing the video game is actually doing something.

I have been to one. While I did not dislike it, it wasn't entertaining to me. So I just don't attend. But if it is entertaining to some, go for it. Animals are not directly harmed so I have no objection to the sport.

uhuh Might as well say pets must go, no hunting/fishing for sport, etcetera, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.
That's why I'm loath to passing judgment on peoples hobbies and interests.

Being Bear, I do not hunt them, but pass no judgment on those who do, and count among my friends, many who do.

To each their own.

Except for the fact that, on average, 2 die every year.

Other than that, you're right. It's good fun. You should try it.

You don't want to know how they install the tail.

Not the same thing. If you or somebody have suggestions on making it safer for the horses, I am sure they will do so. The CHS is taking this approach.

Yokels/dipsh!ts/flakes/dimwits the terms all apply.

Taken seriously for what? Do you really think they care, go ask them if you have the stones.......hey yokels, i need to educate you. Let us know how that worked for ya.
Albertans like to think they're somehow different-at the same time they long to be accepted the larger world and are So Proud that a myopic asswipe like Harper calls them world class-what a pack of losers!

With ongoing disgraces like this latest Stooooooopeeeed debacle they're going to find that they have a harder time attracting quality visitors for the tourism sector, quality conventions and investment.

And slowly over time the edges are going to be worn down-idiotic barbaric clown shows like the chuckwagon races are going to be downplayed and/or shifted to smaller venues further in the country- the 'Real Heart' of ever odoriferous cowboy country-where the stink of sh!t never really leaves your nostrils.

Watch and See if this doesn't Happen!

Come back to this thread ten years hence and call me wrong.

Apparently you don't care about proper grammar, syntax, spelling or a decent education, either.
