Channeling Freeland now…In their final ad drop of the election campaign, the Liberals plan to court progressive NDP and Green party voters.

The one-minute ad — which is set to be released Thursday but was obtained by CTV’s Power Play on Wednesday — features leader Mark Carney sharing an anecdote from a teacher he met on the campaign trail, who says some of her elementary-school-aged students are worried about the ongoing trade war and U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to Canadian sovereignty.

Chrystia Freeland has been appointed the next Warden of Rhodes House and CEO of the Rhodes Trust, returning to Oxford in 2026 to lead the global scholarship organization.
OTTAWA — Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland — who was instrumental in the downfall of former prime minister Justin Trudeau — is set to helm a prestigious English educational trust.

Freeland is set to become the next Warden of Rhodes House and CEO of the Rhodes Trust — the well-known educational charity responsible for awarding the Rhodes Scholarship, an undergraduate fellowship for the University of Oxford in the U.K.

“It is an honour and privilege to return to Oxford as Warden of Rhodes House and CEO of the Rhodes Trust,” Freeland said in a statement.

“Having personally benefitted from a Rhodes Scholarship, I know how deeply transformative and influential it can be on the lives and futures of our Scholars.”

Freeland, herself a Rhodes Scholar, earned a master’s degree in Slavonic studies from Oxford in 1993.

She’ll replace current interim warden Sir Rick Trainor, who assumed the role earlier this year until a permanent candidate was found.

The Toronto Sun reached out to Freeland for comment and to clarify her political future with the Mark Carney Liberals. The PMO had no comment.

When will she step down as MP?
With her position set to begin next July, there’s been no indication of when she’ll step down, or when a byelection will be held in her downtown Toronto riding of University—Rosedale.

Freeland, originally from Peace River, Alta., entered federal politics in a November 2013 byelection win after the resignation of former Ontario premier and interim federal Liberal leader Bob Rae — a seat she held through four consecutive elections.

Upon the Liberals forming government in 2015, Freeland was appointed to cabinet and named International Trade minister.

Cabinet resignation brought down Trudeau
A polarizing figure in Canadian politics, she would later serve as Foreign minister, minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, and in 2020 would succeed Bill Morneau as Finance minister — a position she’d hold until her bombshell Dec. 16, 2024 resignation from cabinet just hours before she was to table her government’s Fall Economic Statement.

That act would trigger a series of events that would eventually lead to the resignation of Trudeau earlier this year, and Freeland to launch an ultimately unsuccessful bid to succeed him as party leader and prime minister, losing to Mark Carney.

She was named minister of Transport and Internal Trade in March, but on Sept. 16 she announced she would again resign from cabinet and would not seek re-election.

Upon her resignation, Carney named Freeland “Canadian Special Representative for the Reconstruction of Ukraine.”
