North Korea is a tiresome political thorn to China like how Israel can be to the US.

Leave it alone, and it's China's problem.

In case you didn't know, the greatest issue over there right now is North Koreans sneaking into China for the greater freedom, which means if others would just stay out of it, the only arguing going on over there right now would be between China and North Korea.
But that don't grease the war machine.

If North Korea fires on the South again, I hope the South actually declares war on them and destroys the regime once and for all..... with US help, and hopefully with military aid from other nations.

The North would cease to be a threat.

Korea would be re-united, as one nation.

Millions would be liberated from starvation and unimaginable Stalinist tyranny.

The Chinese would be put on notice that yes, we still have cojones.

All very good things......the only worthy consideration is are they worth the cost? And that is a decision for South Korea to make.

Korean immigrants are no big deal to China, its not as if they will be burdening the Chinese welfare system is it?

China is very happy to have North Korea between them and any American bases. In short, North Korea is not a really big problem for China.

America cannot destry North Korea by military means no matter how much hot air is expended on the topic. The DPRK is dug in like no other country has ever been and they have (a few) very sharp teeth. Besides, the last decades should have shown the error of believing that a few determined people cannot do unacceptable damage to a first world country. Forget all macho fantasies about 'shock and awe' with respect to North Korea.

The DPRK is at war with the ROK and the USA, they are only in a state of truce. Of course bringing that to a close would change the situation somewhat. Meanwhile, holding live firing exercises in a disputed area must put the truce at risk and can be only considered provocative.

Meaningful engagement with Pyongyang is the the only reasonable way forward but it will take a long time to recover ground lost since the Agreed Framework of 1994.

Baloney.

The USA and South Korea could defeat the North "easily", bot only if you were willing to discount heavy civilian casualties, and that must be the decision of South Korea, without outside pressure...........engagement with the North has proven to be a complete waste of time, despite the efforts of the major useful idiots of the USA, Clinton and Carter.

North Korea does have a huge dug-in military...........supported by an ill-trained and equipped air force that would be something akin to shooting down drones for US and South Korean pilots......and in modern conventional warfare, once you own the air, you own the battlefield.

McCain should be President of the USA.........he is more than an empty suit.

What a brilliant notion, kill them all to make them free!

No, engagement with the DPRK has shown what a complete waste of time it is to make agreements with the US and what suckers the other parties to KEDO were in not forcing the US to live up to the agreement.

It is quite safe to say that the defensive fortifications, the dug in military, the training of the DPRK military and even the quality of their air force is much superior to that of the Taleban and the US has so far failed to defeat them in almost a decade so I am not holding my breath for any sort of 'military' victory for the ROK and the US on the Korean Peninsula.

The way to make progress in that country(s) is to follow up on such initiatives as President Kim Dae-jung's 'Sunshine Policy' and to encourage interaction in trade and all other peaceful activities at all levels.
