PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. —Police are investigating the hanging of middle school student Eddie DeJesus, whose mother found the 13-year-old boy hanging unconscious in his closet last week.

Ed DeJesus Sr. said his son was rushed to St. Mary's Medical Center last Tuesday and was pronounced brain dead Saturday.

DeJesus said his son did not commit suicide but was practicing a secret, deadly game that kills hundreds each year.

"There's this thing called a 'thrill hanging' where kids get, I guess, a high off of not having enough oxygen," DeJesus said.

DeJesus said his son was practicing autoerotic-asphyxiation, a practice of cutting off the oxygen supply to heighten sexual arousal. DeJesus said he's angry he'd never heard about it, so he could have warned Eddie how dangerous it is and not to try it.

"This is something people don't want to talk about, and when it happens to you, you feel sad, you feel ashamed (and) you feel angry," DeJesus said. "But I'm not ashamed of my son. I love my son. My son was amazing."

The family is planning Eddie's funeral for Oct. 11, and DeJesus said he wants to prepare a talk to give students about the dangers of autoerotic-asphyxiation.

Police said they have ruled out bullying in the death, but they are questioning friends and classmates for more information.

Most of the people who die from this are adults. I was aware of this practice when I was 13 but never had any desire to try it for the same reason I wouldnt want to now - risk of death. I dont care how good that orgasm may be its not worth losing your life over.

A few years ago a friend of a friend died in this way. My friend was torn about whether or not to tell the dead guys parents the truth. It looked like a suicide but according to my friend most likely wasnt as this guy was into doing that. Whats worse, thinking your kid committed suicide or thinking they were a complete idiot?

A "death erection" was and is quite common in people who are executed by hanging. In their case the erection forms at or right after the moment of death.

Which seems like something that shouldnt have to be said to anyone. I doubt the people who have died doing it were not aware of the dangers. For some reason they seem to think the risk is worth it and pay for it.

I can't cover every deviancy with my kids. They are 12 and 13. I have to teach them the basics about being safe with your body, and teach them to be able to reason through a risky thing like that. Otherwise I might cover autoerotic asphyxiation, but forget to tell them how to be safe when putting things in their bums. Or cover that, but neglect to inform them how dangerous partner breath play is. Or cover breathplay, but forget to teach them knot safety.

I'm not willing to be that person for my kids. They can find books and videos and do their own research online.
