Chávez expert says racial hate to blame in Venezuela
LONDON – Hostility to Chávez from the Venezuelan elite is based on racial hatred, according to Richard Gott,
author of Hugo Chávez: The Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela, and In the Shadow of the Liberator: The Impact of Hugo Chávez on Venezuela.
The remarks were made in London at an address to the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Management and Commerce on Wednesday night.
“They [rich whites in Venezuela] resent being reminded of the true racial make up of their country. Many only became aware of it during the Chávez years.”
He said that although there is no formal apartheid, Latin American countries resemble settler societies such as Rhodesia, Algeria and South Africa.
He singled out Chile and Argentina as being particularly racist.
“Elites are delicately balanced above a seething mass of discontented humanity,” and are “unwilling to come to terms with the indigenous people whose continent they have usurped,” he said.
In addition to being one of the few English biographers of Chávez, Richard Gott is a former Latin America correspondent and features editor for Britain’s leftist paper, The Guardian.
