Department Of Education Repaces “Father” And “Mother” On Student Aid Forms With “Parent 1” And “Parent 2”…

The U.S. Department of Education announced Thursday that beginning with the 2014-2015 federal student aid form, the Department will — for the first time — collect income “from a dependent student’s legal parents regardless of the parents’ marital status or gender, if those parents live together.”

The new FAFSA form will use terms like “Parent 1” and “Parent 2” instead of gender-specific terms like “mother” and “father.”

“All students should be able to apply for federal student aid within a system that incorporates their unique family dynamics,” Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement. “These changes will allow us to more precisely calculate federal student aid eligibility based on what a student’s whole family is able to contribute and ensure taxpayer dollars are better targeted toward those students who have the most need, as well as provide an inclusive form that reflects the diversity of American families.”

I think going for accuracy and simplicity on forms is nothing new.

For friends of mine who are married lesbians with a son, they find it very frustrating to have to 'explain' themselves on forms.

They aren't an abnormality anymore.

Just like the forms no longer assume everyone in the household has the same last name, they no longer assume mom and dad are married, now they've dropped yet another assumption.

If they really wanna be PC, they should make it bioparent 1, bioparent 2, adopted parent 1, adopted parent 2, surrogate parent 1, surrogate parent 2, etc.

psh, heck no. If you're their parental unit, you shouldn't have to explain why or how you are. Bio dad, step dad, foster dad, gay dad, who the frig cares?

How about just something indicating the 'legal guardian(s)'?... That boils it right down with no PC issues on lifestyle or gender

No one is suggesting they are... Interestingly enough, what about those folks that do identify themselves as mother and father?

Wonder how long it will take for someone to holler discrimination on that

You can't please all the people all of the time but odds are you can probably piss someone off every time. Lol.

Remember the old saying 'the squeaky wheel gets the grease'?

There's another saying that goes with it... The squeaky wheel gets pounded off with a hammer and replaced with one that works

I've noticed that people who complain about the "PC police" use the stupidest examples. Yes, sometimes children don't have parents of the same gender and the forms now reflect that. It's not PC. It's accurate. And complaining about it is stupid.

Well, I feel left out. I only had bio-parents. I missed out on mixed families and same sex parents because I was born too early. I may have to seek professional help to get over the trauma of it all.
